  • Chung Ju-yung founded Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company in 1947. He established Hyundai Motor Company with his brother Chung Se-yung in 1967. The company's first model, the Cortina, arrived in 1968 through a partnership with Ford Motor Company. George Turnbull joined as managing director in February 1974 to lead their own car development efforts. Turnbull hired five British engineers including body designer Kenneth Barnett and chief development engineer Peter Slater. They released the Pony in 1975, marking South Korea's first domestically designed car. Giorgio Giugiaro of Italdesign styled the vehicle while Mitsubishi Motors provided powertrain technology. Exports began the following year to Ecuador and later expanded to Benelux countries. Hyundai entered the British market in 1982 selling 2,993 cars during that first year alone. Canadian sales exceeded expectations when exports started there in 1984. The one millionth Hyundai rolled off the line in 1985 before introducing the Grandeur sedan in 1986.

    Hyundai Motor India Limited formed on the 6th of May 1996 establishing a plant near Chennai at Irungattukottai. Their first car the Santro launched the 23rd of September 1998 becoming second best-selling vehicle from 2000 onward. Two manufacturing plants exist in Sriperumbudur Tamil Nadu combining annual capacity of 600,000 units. An R&D facility opened in Hyderabad during 2007 employing nearly 450 engineers.
