Kia
Kia Corporation started not as a car company but as a maker of steel tubes and bicycle parts. Founded in May 1944 under the name Kyungsung Precision Industry, the company spent its earliest years in industrial manufacturing before producing South Korea's first domestic bicycle, the Samchuly, in 1951. Few who bought that bicycle could have imagined the company behind it would one day sell over 2.8 million vehicles in a single year and plant its Tiger Nose grille on roads across every continent.
The path from steel tubing to Seoul's second-largest automaker is not a straight line. It runs through bankruptcy, a military dictator's forced shutdown, a takeover battle involving Ford and Hyundai, and a design overhaul that a former Audi engineer would orchestrate from studios in Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and South Korea. How did a parts manufacturer become a global brand? And what does a name that translates roughly as 'rising from East Asia' tell us about the ambitions baked into the company from the very start?
By 1952, eight years after its founding, Kyungsung Precision Industry had a new name: Kia Industries. The word Kia draws from two Chinese characters: 起, meaning 'to arise', and 亞, standing for 亞細亞, meaning 'Asia'. The company's own translation renders the combined name as 'rising from East Asia'.
The ambition embedded in that name was real, and Kia acted on it systematically. Starting in 1957, the company built Honda-licensed small motorcycles. Then came Mazda-licensed trucks in 1962, and Mazda-licensed cars in 1974. This pattern of licensed production gave Kia the manufacturing expertise it needed without requiring it to develop entirely original engineering from scratch. In 1973, Kia opened its first integrated automotive assembly plant, the Sohari Plant, which marked a significant step toward self-sufficient car production.
During this period, Kia also assembled the Fiat 132 and the Peugeot 604 under license, rounding out a lineup that drew on European as well as Japanese technology. Korean regulations at the time required Kia to export five cars for every single Fiat or Peugeot kit it imported; Hyundai faced the same export-to-import rule.
In 1981, military leader Chun Doo-hwan enforced industry consolidation across South Korea, a decision that directly targeted Kia's passenger car business. The Brisa range, which Kia had built on a Mazda platform since the early 1970s, was forced out of production. Kia had to abandon passenger cars entirely and refocus on light trucks.
The shutdown was not immediate and clean. Kia assembled a few hundred more cars in 1982 and 1983 even after the ban had taken effect. By 1984 and 1985, passenger car production had dropped to zero. When the company was finally allowed back into the segment in 1986, it started with just 26 cars for the entire year. The year after, output jumped to over 95,000 vehicles, a sign of how much pent-up capacity Kia had been holding back.
The return came through a new partnership with Ford, and the cars themselves were Mazda-derived designs sold under different names in different markets. The Kia Pride, based on the Mazda 121, reached North American buyers as the Ford Festiva. Its successor, the Avella, was sold there as the Ford Aspire. Kia was back in the passenger car business, but the products reaching the United States carried a blue oval, not a red rectangle.
Kia Motors America was incorporated in California on the 21st of October 1992. The very first Kia-branded vehicles sold in the United States were offered through just four dealerships in Portland, Oregon, in 1993, for the 1994 model year. The Sephia and the Sportage 4x4 were the two models that introduced American buyers to the brand.
Expansion was deliberate and regional. By 1995, over one hundred Kia dealerships had opened across thirty states, and that year's sales hit a record 24,740 automobiles. The growth looked encouraging, but the broader economic picture in Asia was deteriorating. Kia declared bankruptcy in 1997 during the Asian financial crisis.
The 1998 resolution brought Hyundai Motor Company into ownership, with Hyundai acquiring 51% of Kia and outbidding Ford, which had held an interest in Kia since 1986. After subsequent divestments, Hyundai settled at roughly one third ownership, a stake valued at just over US$6 billion. The relationship is not one-directional: Kia holds minority ownership in more than twenty Hyundai subsidiaries, with stakes ranging from 4.9% up to 45.37%, totaling more than US$8.3 billion.
Peter Schreyer joined Kia in 2006 as chief design officer, the same year the company identified design as its core future growth engine. Schreyer had designed the Audi TT and worked at Volkswagen, and he had won the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany before arriving in Seoul.
At the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007, Kia revealed the Kee concept vehicle. With it came a new corporate grille that would define how every Kia looked from that moment forward. Schreyer called it the Tiger Nose and described finding it almost by accident: "I was just working on the car and just thinking about different possibilities, and suddenly I found it." His goal was explicit. He wanted "a powerful visual signal, a seal, an identifier" that would let someone identify a Kia from a distance. By 2009, he announced that the Tiger Nose would appear on every vehicle in the lineup.
Schreyer oversaw design activities across Kia centers in Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and the Namyang Design Center in South Korea. Tom Kearns, who had previously been Chief Design Officer at Cadillac where he shaped that brand's hard angles and sharp lines, joined Kia as Chief Design Officer in 2005. Kia cars won the Road and Travel Magazine International Car of the Year award in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
In October 2006, Kia broke ground for Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia in West Point, Georgia, representing a US$1 billion investment. The plant opened in February 2010, after Kia had recorded its 15th consecutive year of increased U.S. market share. The Sorento was the first model assembled there; the Optima followed in 2011, and the Telluride came to the line in January 2019. By September 2019, the facility had built over 3 million units of those three models and was approaching its 10th year of production. Its annual capacity stands at 340,000 vehicles.
In Europe, Kia opened its first manufacturing plant in late 2006, spending approximately 1.7 billion euros to build a facility in Teplička nad Váhom, a village near Žilina in Slovakia, after construction that ran from October 2004 through December 2005. By 2016, the plant employed 3,625 people at an average age of 35, producing 339,500 cars and 612,915 engines in that year alone. The plant covers 166 hectares and has produced over 2.5 million units of the Cee'd, Sportage, and Venga, as well as seven engine types. Revenue from Kia Motors Slovakia in 2016 reached EUR 5.56 billion.
In Mexico, a $1 billion plant in Pesquería, in the state of Nuevo León, produces 300,000 cars per year. Details were announced at a joint press conference on the 28th of August 2014. In India, Kia entered the market in July 2019, building a production facility in Anantpur district, Andhra Pradesh, with an annual capacity of 350,000 units and a total investment commitment of $1.1 billion. Kia crossed 100,000 car sales in India on the 31st of July 2020, the fastest any car manufacturer had done so.
In late 2012, Kia was forced to acknowledge that it had inflated fuel economy figures submitted to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The company reduced its mileage claims by about 3 percent across the board and offered compensation to buyers of affected vehicles.
A decade later came a more visible problem. In 2022, a trend called the Kia Challenge spread across TikTok, encouraging people to steal certain Kia and Hyundai models made between 2010 and 2021. The vulnerability was structural: those vehicles had been manufactured without engine immobilizers, making them easier to start without a key. Kia responded with a free software update requiring a key in the ignition to start the car. The company also distributed over 26,000 steering wheel locks to law enforcement agencies for distribution to affected owners. By February 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported the challenge had caused at least 14 crashes and eight deaths.
In May 2023, Kia and Hyundai agreed to a $200 million class action settlement for consumers who had suffered losses from the security flaws. On the 16th of August 2023, a federal judge rejected that proposed settlement, leaving the legal question unresolved and the consequences of the missing immobilizers still working through the courts.
Kia's sponsorship footprint stretches from grand slam tennis to professional basketball to esports. Rafael Nadal and LeBron James serve as global brand ambassadors. The company also sponsors the FIFA World Cup, Copa América, the Australian Open, and the Asian Games. Kia has backed the NBA and WNBA as associations, and it sponsors the League of Legends European Championship.
In South Korea, the Kia Tigers baseball team plays in Gwangju, a city where Kia also owns the former Asia Motors factory. The Dplus KIA esports organization competes professionally in South Korea. Kia's name also appears on venues: Kia Arena, Kia Center, Kia Forum, and the Kia Oval in cricket.
The company's global name change in January 2021, dropping 'Motors' to become Kia Corporation and adopting an angular new wordmark, signaled that the company sees itself as something broader than a car manufacturer. That same year Kia Canada, which sold nearly 80,000 vehicles annually, introduced its new slogan: 'Movement that inspires'. The Tasman pickup truck, Kia's latest product debut, made its global premiere at the Jeddah International Motor Show in Saudi Arabia on the 29th of October 2024.
