• 1. Introduction

  Estadio Akron sits in Zapopan, next door to Guadalajara, in the Mexican state of Jalisco. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the stadium will not go by its own name. FIFA's rules on corporate sponsorship mean it will be called "Estadio Guadalajara" for the tournament, though this will not be its first name change.

  How did a stadium built for one club end up wearing so many names? What happened the night a departing player scored for the team he was leaving, then swapped shirts at halftime? And what pushed the club to tear up its own playing field? The answers start with how the stadium got built in the first place.

• 2. A Name For Sale

  In February 2004, C.D. Guadalajara announced it would build a stadium of its own instead of staying at Estadio Jalisco. Financial problems and other unspecified setbacks stalled the project for years, and construction did not actually begin until May 2007.

  The finished ground has carried three names over its history: Estadio Chivas, Estadio Omnilife, and Estadio Akron. It sits within the JVC complex, holds 49,813 spectators, and serves as the home of Liga MX club C.D. Guadalajara.

  In December 2017, the stadium changed its name from Estadio Omnilife to Estadio Akron. The change came after signing a sponsorship deal with a car lubricants firm for ten years. That firm is Grupo Akron, a Mexican company that makes lubricants and fuel, and its name now marks the ground it helped fund.

  That ten-year naming deal will still be running when the ground faces its next big test.

• 3. Chicharito's Halftime Switch

  On the 30th of July 2010, Guadalajara faced Manchester United in a friendly, only the third match ever open to the public at the new stadium. Guadalajara won 3-2, and the very first goal scored at the stadium came from Javier "Chicharito" Hernández, playing that night for Guadalajara.

  Hernández had already signed a transfer contract with Manchester United back in March 2010, months before this friendly was played. He wore Guadalajara's colors for the first half, then switched into Manchester United's shirt for the second half. The swap symbolically sealed a transfer he had already signed months before.

  That kind of split-loyalty spectacle would not be the stadium's last brush with international stakes.

• 4. A Global Stage

  The first leg of the 2010 Copa Libertadores Finals gave the stadium its first major international event.

  The following year, in 2011, the ground staged the opening and closing ceremonies of the Pan American Games. It also hosted every match of both the men's and women's football tournaments that year.

  That same year, the stadium held eight matches of the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup. One of them was a semifinal between Uruguay and Brazil.

  Boxing arrived at the venue in 2023, when Canelo Álvarez fought John Ryder there.

  Music followed that same year: The Weeknd performed at the stadium on the 25th of October 2023 during his After Hours til Dawn Tour.

  Shakira played two nights there, on the 16th and the 17th of March 2025, during her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.

  None of those crowds tested the stadium's own turf the way a simple football match once did.

• 5. The Turf Fight

  The stadium's artificial playing surface became a lasting source of controversy, criticized by many notable players who had to compete on it.

  In May 2012, officials announced they would tear out the artificial turf and lay natural grass instead. The work was finished by July, closing out an issue that had followed the ground since its earliest matches.

  With real grass finally down, the stadium turned toward an even bigger assignment far in the distance.

• 6. Countdown To 2026

  Mexico's national team already used the ground to prepare for the World Cup. It played friendlies there on the 4th of September 2010, the 15th of October 2024, and the 14th of October 2025. Those matches finished 1-2, 2-0, and 1-1. The ground will host Mexico again on the 18th of June 2026, this time for a Group A match at the World Cup itself.

  The stadium will host four matches in total during the tournament, all of them in the group stage. One of those four is Mexico's second game of the World Cup.

  Two of the four matches fall in Group A. The first kicks off at 20:00 local time on the 11th of June 2026, and the second, Mexico's game, kicks off at 19:00 on the 18th of June 2026. The other two matches fall in Group K and Group H. Group K plays on the 23rd of June 2026 at 20:00, and Group H plays on the 26th of June 2026 at 18:00.

  Beyond the group stage, the venue will also host Pathway 1 of the World Cup's inter-confederation play-offs. Those play-off matches took place on the 26th of March 2026 and the 31st of March 2026, ending 0-1 and 1-0.

  Group H and Group K sides arriving in late June will be the last teams to play there before the tournament moves on.
