Estadio BBVA
Estadio BBVA sits in Guadalupe, in the greater Monterrey metropolitan area of Nuevo León, Mexico, with a mountain called Cerro de la Silla rising behind its northwestern stands. From those seats, fans watch football with a peak of 1,820 metres looming in their eyeline. It is a stadium built to make you feel close to the action: the distance between the field and the first row of seats is the minimum that FIFA will allow. The grandstand leans at 34 degrees, steep enough that every tier presses toward the pitch. When it opened in August 2015, it replaced Estadio Tecnológico as the home of C.F. Monterrey, ending a relationship between that club and that ground that had lasted 63 years. The name on the facade belongs to the Spanish bank BBVA, specifically its Mexican branch. The nickname the city gave the place is something else entirely: El Gigante de Acero. The Steel Giant. How a 200-million-dollar arena earned that name, and what it took to build it, is the story ahead.
FEMSA, the conglomerate that owns C.F. Monterrey, drove the project from the start. The design was the work of Populous, the multinational architecture firm, in partnership with the Mexican firm VFO. Federico Velasco served as lead designer alongside Populous. Construction broke ground in August 2011 and wrapped in July 2015, nearly four years of work in and around Guadalupe. When the doors opened, the stadium could seat 51,000 people, placing it fourth among all stadiums in Mexico by capacity. The construction cost reached 200 million US dollars, making it the most expensive stadium Mexico had produced at that point in time. The owners did not stop there. By 2016 they had added enough seats to push the total to 53,500. Inside, the building holds suites, a club-themed restaurant, a club lounge, and what the designers describe as high-end interior and exterior finishes. The structure itself measures 277 metres in length, 232 metres wide, 46 metres tall on the north side, and 32 metres on the south, with a circumference of 800 metres.
More than a third of the stadium's total land area consists of green space, a proportion that exceeds the requirements set by local regulations. That was not an accident. The green areas are planted specifically to filter rainwater and channel it back into the aquifers beneath the city. Parking lots ring the venue, and wooded sections are woven between them so that the built environment meets the ecological one. A wooded trail runs along the northern boundary near the Rio La Silla, connecting the stadium to a New Ecological Park. Only trees and plants native to the region appear in these planted zones, a deliberate choice to ensure the landscaping survives and fits the local environment without outside maintenance pressure. The commitment to sustainable design earned the stadium a silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. It was the first football stadium in North America to receive that certification. That distinction was not incidental to the project; it was built into the brief from the beginning, visible in the permeable surfaces, the native planting, and the integration of the parking and trail zones into the surrounding landscape.
The stadium was inaugurated on the 2nd of August 2015 with the eighth edition of the Eusébio Cup, a historic invitation tournament. C.F. Monterrey faced the Portuguese club Benfica and won 3-0. That result gave the new ground an immediate sense of occasion. Seven years later, in July 2022, the venue hosted eight matches of the CONCACAF W Championship, the women's regional tournament held in Mexico. The final on the 18th of July 2022 drew an attendance of 17,247, the largest crowd of the competition at this venue. Earlier that same month, a group stage match had drawn over 4,000 fans, and the third-place match on the same day as the final brought 6,889. The tournament gave the stadium its first sustained run as a host for international women's football, a different kind of test than a club's domestic season.
Justin Bieber brought his Purpose World Tour to the stadium on the 15th of February 2017, filling all 45,535 available seats and generating revenue of roughly 3.5 million US dollars. That show established the venue as a destination for touring artists operating at the highest level. Coldplay played across two nights in March 2022 during the Music of the Spheres World Tour, with Carla Morrison and Danny Lux as opening acts; combined attendance for those two nights reached 112,262 and revenue exceeded 8.9 million US dollars. Bad Bunny followed later that same year with two nights in December under the World's Hottest Tour, drawing a combined 90,084 people and earning over 17.4 million US dollars in revenue. The Weeknd performed on the 26th of September 2023, during the After Hours til Dawn Tour, with Kaytranada and Mike Dean on the bill; 46,791 tickets were sold at a gross of roughly 5.7 million US dollars. Paul McCartney took the stage on the 8th of November 2024 with his Got Back tour. Shakira followed with two nights in March 2025 as part of the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, selling 88,201 tickets across both dates and grossing over 12.4 million US dollars.
Estadio BBVA is one of three Mexican venues selected to host multiple matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The assignment covers four matches in total: three group stage contests and one Round of 32 fixture. The group stage matches fall in Group F on the 14th of June and the 20th of June 2026, and in Group A on the 24th of June 2026. The Round of 32 match, pitting the winner of Group F against the runner-up of Group C, is scheduled for the 29th of June 2026. The stadium holds a notable distinction among the three Mexican venues: it is the only one of the three that will not host a match featuring Mexico's national team. Mexico's group games go to Estadio Azteca and Estadio Akron instead. The road to the World Cup included two inter-confederation play-off matches at the venue in March 2026. On the 26th of March 2026 a crowd of 33,547 witnessed one match; five days later, on the 31st of March, a crowd of 49,286 attended the second, one of the largest attendances the stadium had seen.
