  The stage at Stage 42 in New York City held a unique energy on the evening of the 5th of May 2024. A group of actors stood ready to play out an adventure for a live audience inside the Forgotten Realms setting. This production combined actual play improvisation and immersive theater into one experience. Audience members could select character archetypes from a shortlist pulled from 33 total characters designed specifically for this show. The outcome of the adventure depended heavily on browser-based voting software that determined cast actions. David Andrew Laws served as the Dungeon Master while Sarah Davis Reynolds acted as the Tavern Keeper. They ran the adventure together with the player characters consisting of various archetypes chosen by the crowd.

  The Twenty-Sided Tavern first appeared at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2021 without any official license. Creators David Carpenter, David Andrew Laws, and Sarah Davis Reynolds marketed it as a Dungeons and Dragons-style production during those early days. Reynolds explained that they worked on Zoom shows during the COVID-19 pandemic using interactive technology to be more engaging than watching another Shakespeare reading online. Both creators were long-time players of the game so the concept immediately clicked when they requested one show feature Dungeons and Dragons. Development happened in front of audiences at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival followed by extensive work in New York. The full production premiered at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera in 2022 before moving to runs in Chicago and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast eventually signed an official deal allowing namechecks like Waterdeep Baldur's Gate and the Sword Coast into the script. The off-Broadway show opened officially after previews began in April 2024 and closed on the 11th of May 2025.

  A tavern bar hidden within the set contained monitors and technical controls for both the Dungeon Master and Tavern Keeper. Christopher Cruz of Rolling Stone described how what begins with a simple flowchart rapidly expands as the game progresses into a dizzying web of hundreds of potential outcomes. A sequence chart monitor displayed a branching list of possible scenarios dependent on each decision or dice roll. A video wall provided various backgrounds overlays along with character and item cards for visual storytelling. The Tavern Keeper and Dungeon Master used this wall to depict adventure details including hit point meters and visualizations of combat effects onscreen. Reynolds explained that the split between roles put one person in charge of the story while the other handled game mechanics. She noted that puppy dog eyes would not change the game rules even if the audience begged for mercy. Gamiotics software facilitated all audience participation through browser-based voting systems designed by the company itself.

• 4. Touring Schedule

  The Sydney Opera House Studio venue hosted the production starting in December 2024 under local direction from Michael Fell. This engagement ran until it closed on the 6th of April 2025 following the New York run which ended earlier that year. The U.S. national tour officially began in July 2025 after successful performances in major cities. Brisbane Times reported that the earliest iteration was unlicensed and unable to tap into the game's cultural references before the official deal. The show opened at Stage 42 in May 2024 after previews started in April. It then moved to the Sydney Opera House where a local cast performed alongside the established creative team. The timeline shows rapid expansion from Philadelphia Fringe Festival beginnings to international stages within just four years of development.

  David Andrew Laws played the Dungeon Master role in the original Off-Broadway cast while Sarah Davis Reynolds took the Tavern Keeper position. Tyler Nowell Felix Atlas Adams and Madelyn Murphy formed the initial player character lineup including roles like The Warrior The Mage and The Trickster. Diego F. Salinas joined as another key performer for the original run. Felicia Day appeared as a guest star during September 2024 followed by Aabria Iyengar who stayed through October 2024 and returned February-March 2025. Travis McElroy visited in November 2024 and March 2025 while Erika Ishii came in December 2024. Jack Lepiarz Neil Newbon Darin De Paul and Anjali Bhimani all rotated through guest spots between January 2025 and April 2025. Iyengar became the show's first guest Dungeon Master during her tenure. During the national tour Damien Haas joined as a guest star in Chicago alongside returning names like Bhimani Iyengar and Ishii.

• 6. Critical Reception

  Catey Sullivan of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the production one star out of four describing it as a series of repetitive one-note jokes told by one-dimensional characters. She argued that the show could not sustain a two-hour runtime despite its comedic elements. Elisabeth Vincentelli of The New York Times noted the format was not straightforward fantasy but rather a play session where three actors tried to pull off a mission by reacting to prompts. Shaye Weaver of Time Out wrote that audiences did not need prior knowledge of D&D to enjoy the experience though fans would appreciate gamer tropes peppered throughout. Joey Sims for IGN stated that browser-based voting software designed by Gamiotics was smoothly integrated and thankfully bug-free during performances. He felt the show coasted on creative design strong performances and stimulating crowd work for most of its running time. However he concluded that it forgot the key element of both great D&D games and great theater: a meaningful story leaving him feeling ultimately unsatisfied.
