Cold Mountain (film)
In 1997, United Artists purchased the rights to Charles Frazier's bestselling novel for Anthony Minghella to write and direct. Sydney Pollack served as producer on the initial project. The film began as a period love story with an estimated budget of $40 million. Historical painter Don Troiani joined the production team as historical advisor. As the script developed, the scope expanded into an expensive epic. The final budget grew to nearly $120 million.
Principal photography started on the 10th of July 2002, in Romania. MGM pulled out of the deal during filming in October 2002. Executive producer Harvey Weinstein agreed to fund the $80 million project after receiving a $10 million tax break. Tom Cruise had wanted to play Inman but demanded a $20 million fee that the studio refused to meet. Transylvania offered lower infrastructure costs than the Appalachians, making it a viable location despite fewer power cables and paved roads. Production moved to Eastern Europe to reduce expenses while maintaining visual authenticity.
W.P. Inman fights in the Battle of the Crater three years after enlisting in May 1861. He survives the battle and comforts a dying acquaintance from Cold Mountain while Stobrod Thewes plays his fiddle nearby. A nurse reads Ada's letter to him in a hospital bed near death. Inman deserts and begins a long trek back home through the war-torn South. He encounters corrupt preacher Veasey who drowns his impregnated slave before joining forces with the deserter. Junior betrays them to the Confederate Home Guard, leading to a skirmish where Veasey dies and Inman is left for dead. An elderly hermit nurses him back to health before he meets Sara and her infant child Ethan at a cabin.
Walter Murch edited Cold Mountain using Apple's sub-$1000 Final Cut Pro software on several off-the-shelf PowerMac G4 computers. This marked a significant industry shift since expensive Avid systems were usually required for big-budget films. The editing process was documented in the 2005 book Behind the Seen: How Walter Murch Edited Cold Mountain Using Apple's Final Cut Pro and What This Means for Cinema. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing based on this innovative approach. Industry professionals noted how this technology democratized high-end post-production capabilities.
Cold Mountain grossed $95.6 million in the United States and Canada plus $77.4 million internationally for a total of $173 million. Harvey Weinstein stated the film would break even if it reached $135 million. Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four while Richard Corliss called it a grand and poignant movie epic. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore awarded the film an average grade of B+ on their scale from A+ to F. Stephen Hunter ranked it first on his list for The Washington Post while Peter Travers placed it fifth for Rolling Stone. Renée Zellweger won Best Supporting Actress at the 76th Academy Awards.
T Bone Burnett produced the soundtrack alongside Tim Eriksen who taught performers Sacred Harp singing techniques. Jack White of The White Stripes wrote songs for the album while also appearing as Georgia in the film. Elvis Costello and Sting contributed vocals with bluegrass singer Alison Krauss performing on both nominated tracks. Gabriel Yared's Oscar-nominated score included four tracks totaling approximately fifteen minutes of music. The soundtrack won a Grammy Award and drew comparisons to O Brother, Where Art Thou? due to shared producer T Bone Burnett. Critics praised how the music captured rural American culture from the Civil War era.
