  • Brandy Rayana Norwood, known simply as Brandy, once held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks in a row. The song was "The Boy Is Mine," a duet with the singer Monica. It is still counted as the most successful song by a female duo in the music industry. Brandy was born on the 11th of February 1979. She is an American singer, songwriter and actress, known for intricate vocal riffs, and she is regarded as an influential figure in contemporary R&B. How did she reach that peak so young? Why do other singers talk about her voice as a template they still study? And what did years in the public eye ask of her along the way?

  • In McComb, Mississippi, gospel singer and choir director Willie Norwood raised a daughter who learned music at church. Brandy performed her first gospel solo, "Jesus Loves Me," at the age of two. Her mother, Sonja Norwood, worked as a district manager for H&R Block. Brandy is the older sister of entertainer Ray J. Through their mother, the two are third cousins of guitarist and singer Bo Diddley. Rapper Snoop Dogg has claimed the family tie to Brandy as well, though she says she is unsure it is real.

The family moved to Carson, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, in 1983. Willie had accepted a position there as minister of music at Southside Church of Christ. Brandy attended Ambler Avenue Elementary School and later Bancroft Junior High School. At the age of seven she became a fan of Whitney Houston, and her hunger to perform grew. She enrolled at the Hollywood High Performing Arts Center to pursue her ambitions, but found little institutional help in landing auditions.

In 1989 she met producer Marcus Aurelius, who worked to promote her but could not win a deal with a major label. By the age of eleven she was entering talent competitions and singing at public events with a youth group. In 1990 she signed with Teaspoon Productions, headed by Chris Stokes. He had her record backing vocals for the R&B group Immature. When plans for a girl group failed, he arranged a solo demo instead.

In 1993, while talks with East West Records continued, her parents arranged a contract with Atlantic. First came an audition for Darryl Williams, the company's director of A&R, and for general manager Sylvia Rhone. Her mother resigned from her job to manage her daughter, and Brandy was tutored privately from the tenth grade onward.

  • Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins was still a fledgling producer when he was consulted on Brandy's second album, Never Say Never. She co-wrote and produced six of its songs. One of them was "The Boy Is Mine," her first number one on the Hot 100. The song exploited the media's presumption that the two young singers were rivals. It eventually earned Brandy and Monica a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, the first Grammy for each of them.

Never Say Never arrived in June 1998 and became her biggest-selling album, reaching number 2 on the Billboard 200. It spawned seven singles. The second to reach number one was "Have You Ever?," written by Diane Warren. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic praised the team for finding "a middle ground between Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige" and called the result adult contemporary with a slight streetwise edge. In 1999 Brandy took the record on the Never Say Never World Tour, with shows in Europe, Asia and the United States.

The pairing with Monica kept returning. In February 2012 Brandy joined her on "It All Belongs to Me," a single from Monica's album New Life. In 2015 the British house duo 99 Souls built the mashup "The Girl Is Mine" around Brandy's re-recorded vocals from the original. It reached the top five in Belgium and the United Kingdom.

In August 2020 the two women faced off in the webcast series Verzuz, filmed at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. A record-breaking 1.2 million viewers watched on the Instagram live stream alone. BET ranked the night number 1 on its list of the 20 most viral moments of 2020. In June 2024 both singers appeared in Ariana Grande's video for her own "The Boy Is Mine," playing news anchors, and joined her on a remix two weeks later. From October to December 2025 they toured together for the first time as co-headliners. Planned as 24 arena dates, The Boy Is Mine Tour grew to 32 shows.

  • Brandy's self-titled debut came out in late September 1994 and peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200. Its sound was street-oriented R&B with hints of hip hop and pop-soul. "I Wanna Be Down" and "Baby" both topped the Hot R&B Singles chart and went platinum. "Brokenhearted," a duet with Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men, reached number 2. The album brought two Grammy nominations, for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. AllMusic writer Eddie Huffman likened her to a lower-key Janet Jackson or a more stripped-down Mary J. Blige.

Full Moon followed in February 2002 and debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200. Brandy and Jerkins blended her older R&B with futuristic production, including 2-step garage and electro-funk. Her voice had grown deeper, warmer and smokier since the 1990s, and the lyrics turned to adult themes of intimacy. Rolling Stone was unmoved and called it "frantic, faceless, fake-sexy R&B."

Afrodisiac, in June 2004, pushed further. Motherhood and a new affinity for the British band Coldplay shaped her vision. Producers Timbaland and Kanye West built an illbient world of ambient pop, dub and breakbeat. It became her most critically acclaimed album, even though it debuted at number 3 and sold only moderately. Late that year she asked Atlantic for a release after eleven years, saying she wished "to move on." The label granted it unconditionally.

The next decade tested her. Human, released in December 2008 through Epic Records, opened at number 15 with 73,000 copies. It reached only 214,000 in total domestic sales, and her contract with the label ended. Two Eleven, in October 2012, brought her back to R&B with what she called a "progressive edge." It reached number 3 on the Billboard 200.

In 2016 she sued Chameleon Entertainment Group and its president Breyon Prescott, saying the label would not let her record and release albums. A second suit demanded $270,000 and a declaration freeing her from Chameleon. The parties settled in 2017. Her seventh album, B7, arrived in July 2020 on her own label, Brand Nu Inc., and debuted at number 12. Christmas with Brandy followed in November 2023, after she signed with Motown Records in June 2022. It holds six original songs and six covers of Christmas standards.

  • Brandy's first television job was a part in the sitcom Thea, where she played the daughter of a single mother. It lasted a single season. She said she was relieved when it ended, explaining, "I felt bad for everybody else but me. It was a good thing, because I could do what I had to do, because I wanted to sing."

Moesha, her next series, debuted on UPN in January 1996 and soon became the network's most-watched show. Brandy played the title role of a Los Angeles girl coping with a stepmother and the pressures of growing up. William Allen Young and Sheryl Lee Ralph played her family. The show spun off The Parkers and ended after six seasons with a cliffhanger meant for a seventh. Brandy won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Youth Actor/Actress.

In 1997 Whitney Houston hand-picked her to play the title role in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Jason Alexander and Whoopi Goldberg joined the multiracial cast, and Houston appeared as well. About 60 million people watched the two-hour broadcast. It gave the network its highest ratings in that time slot in 16 years.

Brandy made her big screen debut as Karla Wilson in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The film took $16.5 million on its opening weekend, though Rotten Tomatoes rates it 7 percent on 46 reviews. In 1999 she co-starred with Diana Ross in the telefilm Double Platinum, shot in only twenty days in New York City. In September 2024 she drew positive reviews as Belinda in the A24 horror film The Front Room. She returned as Karla in a mid-credits scene in July 2025.

Television kept calling. In 2006 she judged the first season of America's Got Talent, which ended on the 17th of August with the win of 11-year-old Bianca Ryan. She was originally due back for season two but declined, saying she "couldn't give the new season the attention and commitment it deserved." In fall 2010 she placed fourth on season 11 of Dancing with the Stars, partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Judges and viewers had considered her a frontrunner. She later played Chardonnay on The Game, Cassie on Star and one-fourth of a veteran hip-hop group on the ABC drama Queens.

On stage she made her Broadway debut in April 2015 as Roxie Hart in Chicago. A six-week run stretched to August, and she returned to the role in 2016 and 2017. She also appeared in the Netflix comedy Best. Christmas. Ever! in 2023, which drew largely negative reviews. She next reprises Cinderella in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, the fifth film in that franchise.

  • Slant Magazine writer Andrew Chan hears "an unusual mix of warmth and cold, hard edges" in Brandy's voice. Some classify her as a contralto, and critics and Brandy herself describe the tone as soft, raspy and husky. Chan says her subtle manipulation of timbre and texture rewards close listening. He names her long, cascading riffs as the skill R&B die-hards revere. PopMatters writer Terry Sawyer notes that she piles each song with interlocking sounds that create the illusion of vocal massiveness. In 2023 Rolling Stone placed her at number 193 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Her first and loudest influence was Whitney Houston, whom she once called her "idol." In a 2014 interview Brandy said Houston was the greatest voice of all time. Houston eventually became a friend and mentor, and joked that she was Brandy's "godmother." The older woman was hardly alone in shaping her. Brandy also credits gospel-jazz singer Kim Burrell, new age artist Enya and the English singer-songwriter Sade, with whom she says she found her own niche.

The earliest teacher was her father. In her telling, they sang gospel in church almost exclusively a cappella, with Willie Norwood as musical director. He bought her a first 4-track tape recorder. She did not like her own voice at first, she recalls, until he urged her to embrace its unique qualities. She says he "taught me everything that I know" about singing.

Her acting heroes include Lucille Ball, Jenifer Lewis, Gabrielle Union, Niecy Nash and Kim Fields. She says they helped her discover a strength in comedy. Her long list of musical inspirations also takes in Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, the Clark Sisters and Stevie Wonder.

  • Songwriter Sean Garrett says he tries to outdo what Brandy and Rodney Jerkins accomplished on Full Moon. Singer B.Slade said that album single-handedly changed the vocal game and became a template for vocal choices and background arrangements. India.Arie often cites its song "He Is" the same way. That praise helped earn Brandy the nickname the "Vocal Bible."

The line of admirers runs across genres. Erykah Badu says Brandy's debut partly influenced her own 1997 debut, Baduizm. Rihanna listened to Afrodisiac every day in the studio while making Good Girl Gone Bad. Kelly Rowland named her as an inspiration for the album Ms. Kelly. John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers called her the "main inspiration" behind his guitar work on Stadium Arcadium. Solange told NPR that Brandy is "really the foundation" of progressive, experimental R&B, and that Frank Ocean and Miguel would say so too. Afrodisiac is credited as a predecessor to alternative R&B.

Her firsts matter beyond the charts. Brandy was the first African American to play Cinderella, and Keke Palmer credits that role for her own chance to play the part on Broadway. Moesha stands among the longest-running Black sitcoms of all time. In 2017 she and co-star Lana Gordon became the first black co-leads in the Broadway production of Chicago.

The official honors accumulated late. She became the second recipient of the Lady of Soul Award in November 2016, and in 2019 she received the BMI President's Award. In January 2026 she received the Black Music Icon award at the Recording Academy Honours. On the 30th of March 2026 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her memoir Phases, co-written with Gerrick Kennedy, came out the next day. It reached the top of the New York Times Best Seller list in April.

  • In 1999 Brandy became a CoverGirl and appeared in a series of commercials. She also represented Candie's in 1998 and DKNY in the spring of 2000, and the Wilhelmina Agency handled her modeling. Mattel released the Brandy Doll in 1999 and a holiday edition in 2000. Millions were sold, making them among the biggest-selling toys the company had made.

Her giving began early. She and Ray J set up the Norwood Kids Foundation to use performing arts to shape young people into self-confident, responsible, caring individuals. In 1999 she became UNICEF's first international spokesperson for youth. In 2000 she gave $100,000 to 2000 WATTS, an entertainment community center founded by Tyrese Gibson in Watts, Los Angeles. She also supports Make A Wish and RAINN, and in 2018 she appeared in a Hands-Only CPR announcement for the American Heart Association with fellow Chicago cast members.

Her private life drew its own headlines. In 1996 she accompanied future Lakers player Kobe Bryant to his prom at Lower Merion High School. She called Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris her "first love." During work on Full Moon she became involved with producer Robert "Big Bert" Smith, and in February 2002 she announced she was expecting her first child, Sy'Rai. In 2004 Smith revealed the pair had never been legally wed. Brandy later confirmed it, saying the pretense came from pressure to be a role model. She also ended a 14-month engagement to NBA guard Quentin Richardson in September 2005.

On the 30th of December 2006, Brandy was driving 65 mph on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles when she struck a Toyota driven by 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj. Traffic ahead had slowed sharply. Aboudihaj later died of her injuries. A California Highway Patrol source said she had struck the car in front of her and then braked before Brandy made contact. Toxicology showed slight traces of marijuana. Brandy was not arrested. Aboudihaj's parents filed a $50 million wrongful death suit, set for trial in April 2009, but it was settled out of court. Her husband settled in November 2009, and the couple's two children received $300,000 each. The crash was the event she tied to stepping away from America's Got Talent. In May 2009 she said it "did completely change my life" and that she prayed about it every day.

When B7 closed with the song "Bye BiPolar," fans speculated about its meaning. Brandy explained that she has not been diagnosed as bipolar, and that the title is a metaphor for how toxic relationships worsened her struggles. She has spoken of severe depression, trauma and PTSD. She says she overcame them by doing the work, through therapy, prayer, journaling and meditation.
