Akuma first appeared in the arcade version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo on the 1st of March 1994, emerging not as a standard character but as a secret boss who could only be unlocked by meeting specific, obscure conditions. He did not appear on the character select screen, and his existence was initially a rumor fueled by April Fools jokes about a hidden character named Sheng Long. When players finally managed to summon him, Akuma would defeat the game's final boss, M. Bison, in a single, brutal combo before challenging the player to a fight. This moment was designed to be a shock to the system, a sudden shift from the expected narrative to a display of overwhelming power that left players reeling. The character was created in a single hour by designer Akiman, who was instructed by his superiors to make something similar to the Super Saiyan transformation from the Dragon Ball franchise. The design was influenced by Kongorikishi statues, which are fierce guardian deities often found at the entrance of Buddhist temples, giving Akuma a face that was both terrifying and divine. The Japanese kanji ten, meaning Heaven, was added to his name by the staff in a fit of impulse, a decision that would later be changed to the kanji for demon, reflecting his true nature.
Brotherhood and Betrayal
The core of Akuma's story lies in his relationship with his older brother, Gouken, the master of Ryu and Ken. Akuma was born out of a request between developers from the franchise, specifically Noritaka Funamizu, who wanted to create a character that contrasted both M. Bison and Ryu. While M. Bison represented political tyranny and a desire for world domination, Akuma represented a pure, unadulterated obsession with fighting itself. He is the younger brother of Gouken, and their shared history is one of tragedy and ideological divergence. Gouken sought to master the Satsui no Hadou, the Dark Hadou, to protect the world, while Akuma embraced it, believing that true strength could only be found in the darkness. This divergence led to a fatal confrontation where Akuma defeated his brother, an act that cemented his status as a rogue entity. The story explores how Akuma senses that Ryu possesses a similar power to him, making him a target for Akuma's interest. In the Street Fighter Alpha: Generations OVA, the narrative delves into their past, showing how Akuma's descent into darkness was a choice he made willingly, even after falling off a cliff and surviving a fall that should have killed him. He chose to drop himself into a river rather than be saved, a decision that symbolized his rejection of humanity and his acceptance of the demon within. The Evolution of Power
Akuma's power has evolved through several distinct forms, each representing a different stage of his corruption and strength. Starting with Street Fighter Alpha 2, Capcom created a stronger alter-ego of Akuma called Shin Akuma, which was intended to challenge the player. Because he wore a blue gi, developers referred to him as Blue Shin Gouki, a nod to his increased power level. His appearance is very similar to Akuma's, but with a purple karate gi in the Alpha series and marginally darker skin tone. Later, Capcom created another alter-ego named Oni, which was designed to be beyond Shin Akuma. Despite being based on Akuma from the Street Fighter IV games, his body type, skill composition, and skill performance are all different, making him a unique entity. In Street Fighter V, his appearance changed again, with his hair reaching far longer and growing around his face like a lion's mane. Takayuki Nakayama explained that the staff considered multiple designs that were scrapped, including a shirtless look, multiple scars within the body, one with a broken shirt, and one where he carried a baby. These scrapped designs involved Akuma taking care of a baby, which went through several trials and errors when developing the game. The final design in Street Fighter 6 uses Shin Akuma but under the label of SiN Akuma or SiN Gouki, starting with a fan event made in Japan in 2024.
