Fantasy Flight Games published the Star Wars Roleplaying Game starting in 2012 after acquiring the license from Lucasfilm Ltd., which was announced at Gen Con 2011. Since 2020, the game line has been maintained by Edge Studio, a subsidiary of Asmodee.
The three main game lines are Star Wars: Edge of the Empire (2013), for characters on the fringes of galactic society; Star Wars: Age of Rebellion (2014), for rebel soldiers fighting the Empire; and Star Wars: Force and Destiny (2015), for Force-sensitive characters and surviving Jedi.
The system uses seven custom dice types that show symbols rather than numbers, resolving actions on two axes simultaneously: succeed or fail, and lucky or unlucky. Players can succeed at a task while generating negative side-effects, or fail while producing useful advantages for future actions.
Edge of the Empire won RPG Game of the Year at the Golden Geek Awards in 2013 and the UK Games Expo Award for Best Role-Playing Game the same year. Force and Destiny won the Origins Award for Best Role-Playing Game and Fan Favorite Role-Playing Game in 2016, and Edge of the Empire won the Origins Fan Favorite award again in 2017.
The game primarily supports the era of the original Star Wars trilogy. Sourcebooks extend coverage to the Clone Wars era via Rise of the Separatists (2019) and Collapse of the Republic (2019), the early Rebellion period via Dawn of Rebellion (2018), and the sequel trilogy era through the Force Awakens Beginner Game (2016), though sequel era support is limited.
In 2020, Fantasy Flight Games announced it was discontinuing its tabletop roleplaying game lines. Asmodee transferred the Star Wars Roleplaying Game license to its subsidiary Edge Studio, which announced continued support through reprints and new supplements starting in 2021. New print runs of core books and sourcebooks were released from November 2022 onward.
