The year 2012 marked a turning point when Connolly released his first feature screenplay as a writer. The film Safety Not Guaranteed premiered that same year with Colin Trevorrow directing.
Connolly and director Colin Trevorrow wrote the original screenplay for Jurassic World which opened in 2015. They also wrote the sequel titled Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom by 2018 and received story credits for the final film Jurassic World Dominion released on the 10th of June 2022.
Warner Bros. hired Connolly to rewrite Kong Skull Island in 2017 while he co-wrote uncredited early drafts of Pacific Rim Uprising earlier in his career. He contributed to Detective Pikachu in 2019 as a co-writer.
Future plans include a live action Legend of Zelda film directed by Wes Ball produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad. Connolly is also developing a remake of Flight of the Navigator for television or film and has been tapped to write the script for an upcoming Metal Gear movie.
