He grew up in Oakland where his father played music in a country rock band and his mother worked as a photographer while running a day-care center. His maternal grandmother carried Sephardic Jewish ancestry with ancestors who settled in the Caribbean centuries ago. As a child he sang in the chorus of the San Francisco Opera. During his teenage years he won awards from both the Mill Valley Film Festival and the San Francisco Youth Film Festival. He graduated from Piedmont High School before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in film and dramatic writing from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 1999.

By August 2017 writer Jack Thorne joined to rewrite the script due to dissatisfaction by Lucasfilm with their draft. In September 2017 Trevorrow was let go from the project because of creative differences. J.J. Abrams replaced him as director and co-wrote the final script with Chris Terrio.
