  • In the opening scene of the story, a timid high school student named Yugi Mutou solves an ancient Egyptian artifact known as the Millennium Puzzle. The moment he completes the puzzle, his body becomes the host to a mysterious spirit with the personality of a gambler. This spirit challenges antagonists to Shadow Games that reveal their true nature. The loser often faces adverse consequences such as being sent to the Shadow Realm or suffering physical harm. Yugi and his friends gradually learn that this spirit is actually the nameless Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt who lost his memories after being sealed inside the Puzzle. They wager their lives facing off against those who wield other Millennium Items and the dark power of the Shadow Games.

  • Konami launched the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in Japan during 1999 based on the Duel Monsters game from the original manga series. By 2011 Guinness World Records named it the best-selling trading card game in history with billions of cards sold worldwide. Shueisha reported over one hundred million copies of the manga sold globally by December 2002. TV Tokyo announced in August 2008 that over three billion Yu-Gi-Oh! cards had been sold worldwide. The franchise became one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time through its successful connection between comics television and collectible games.

  • Kazuki Takahashi originally planned to draw a horror manga before deciding to use battle as his primary theme. He found it difficult to create something original since there were so many fighting manga already existing. When the word game came to mind he found it much easier to work with. Takahashi decided to base the series around such games where Yugi was a weak immature boy who became a hero when playing games. He believed each person has a strong hidden part within themselves that emerges if they believe in themselves and their friends. The names Yūgi and Jōnouchi are based on the Japanese word yūjō which means friendship.

  • The first anime adaptation produced by Toei Animation aired for twenty-seven episodes from April to October 1998 on TV Asahi. A second series called Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ran for two hundred twenty-four episodes from April 2000 to September 2004 animated by Gallop. 4Kids Entertainment censored the English language release to make it more appropriate for children. Mentions of death or violence were replaced by references to being sent to the Shadow Realm. The company developed films specifically for Western audiences including Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light released in August 2004.

During the 2024 US Olympic track and field trials Noah Lyles showed off Blue Eyes White Dragon and Exodia cards before running.
