The Courtship of Princess Leia
Han Solo returned to Coruscant aboard the Mon Remonda expecting an end to his separation from Princess Leia. His vessel dropped out of hyperspace into the Coruscant system only to be met by multiple Imperial Star Destroyers. Hapan Battle Dragons and a Hapes Nova Class battle cruiser blocked his path to the Imperial Palace. Inside, C-3PO translated comments during a formal diplomatic reception as the Hapes delegation presented stunning gifts to Leia. These included a dozen Star Destroyers, a Hapan Gun of Command, and a small plant resembling a bonsai that promoted longevity. Most devastatingly, they offered the hand of Prince Isolder, son of Ta'a Chume, in holy matrimony. Han wandered into a cantina in the lower reaches of Coruscant in a frenzy of fear and jealousy. He participated in a high-stakes sabacc game where one opponent proffered real estate instead of liquid financial instruments.
Han abducts Leia using the Gun of Command and flees with Chewbacca aboard his refitted Millennium Falcon. They head toward Dathomir while Prince Isolder pursues them with his Hapan fleet. Luke Skywalker used his Force powers to navigate a shorter but still safe path through hyperspace to arrive shortly after Han. The Millennium Falcon was forced to land on Dathomir itself where it is captured by an Imperial garrison marooned there years ago. Zsinj had truly laid claim to Dathomir with the Iron Fist orbiting above it alongside other capital ships. An orbital shipyard Han had hunted for so long sat complete in space around the planet. Isolder sets out in his Miy'til fighter accompanied by Luke's X-wing fighter while the Hapan fleet fights a covering action before retreating into hyperspace. On the surface, they discover remnants of the star-borne Jedi training academy known as the Chu'unthor. Centuries later, only intruders needed a lightsaber to gain access to the sealed vessel.
Zsinj dictated a combination ultimatum and deal with Gethzerion, the head of the Nightsisters. He promised to give them an Imperial shuttle if they gave him Solo to torture and execute. If they refused, he would keep his nightcloak intact which reflected all solar emissions back into space. This network of geostationary satellites would slowly freeze Dathomir killing all life on the planet. Han's group infiltrates the Imperial garrison and steals the Falcon piloting it out into the ongoing Battle of Dathomir. Solo allows the Iron Fist to acquire the Falcon with a tractor beam. Once within the ship's deflector shields, he breaks free of the beam lock. He pilots his vessel over the superstructure of the gigantic vessel and arrives upon the main bridge. Two concussion missiles destroy the bridge killing Zsinj and knocking out the ventral shields. The Hapan fleet uses their ion cannons to disable the ship after it is exposed. Defeated, Zsinj's empire soon crumbles shortly thereafter.
American writer Dave Wolverton penned this 1994 science fiction novel as part of the Star Wars franchise. It continued a streak of New York Times Bestsellers that started with 1991's Heir to the Empire. Wolverton crafted the story to deal with the downfall of Warlord Zsinj and circumstances leading to the marriage of Han Solo and Princess Leia. These characters originated in the 1977 film Star Wars: A New Hope. The author developed the narrative to explore how these two figures would progress toward marriage through an intrepid journey together. His creative choices focused on integrating complex political dynamics between the New Republic and the Hapes Cluster into the existing saga framework.
Reception for The Courtship of Princess Leia was predominantly positive throughout its initial release period. The book became a New York Times Bestseller in both hardback and paperback formats. The Hamilton Spectator gave a positive review for the novel alongside the Milwaukee Sentinel. A reviewer for the Milwaukee Sentinel commented that the book continued the stellar tradition of George Lucas' Star Wars movies. Publishers Weekly opined that although parts of the book were disappointing, it raised expectations for Wolverton's future works once he moved on to other things. Tor.com included the book in a list of Where to Begin with Star Wars Books as one of the craziest Star Wars novels ever written.
The Chu'unthor was mentioned in the 2010 reference book The Jedi Path during the original continuity era. In 2014 following the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney all spin-off works up to that point became non-canon. This change excluded The Clone Wars from the reclassification process. Dathomir later became a major location in The Clone Wars series where it was retroactively established as the homeworld of Darth Maul and Asajj Ventress. This replaced Rattatak as their place of origin within the new timeline. Dathomir and the witches were referenced again in The Book of Boba Fett when Fett receives a Rancor. Fett mentions wanting to ride the rancor like the witches on Dathomir during his journey through the galaxy.
