The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show
Ed Sullivan stood at London's Heathrow Airport on the 31st of October 1962. He watched a crowd of 1,500 fans wait for the band to return from Sweden. This sight changed his mind about booking British acts. Before that moment, talent booker Jack Babb had seen the group twice in concert but remained uninterested. British musicians rarely found success in America during that era. Peter Prichard, a London agent and friend of Brian Epstein, invited Babb to see them. Epstein flew to New York on November 5 to promote another act. Six days later, he met Sullivan at the Hotel Delmonico. They agreed to have the band perform three shows. The group earned $2,400 for each appearance.
CBS saw huge anticipation for the first performance. Fifty thousand ticket requests poured in for the 728-seat Studio 50. This number far surpassed the 7,000 requests Elvis Presley received for his 1957 debut. Richard Nixon's daughters Julie and Tricia attended the show. Backstage, Olympic gold-medal speed skater Terry McDermott posed with the band. He pretended to cut Paul McCartney's hair while others looked on. Ed Sullivan introduced the group after receiving a telegram from Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker. The band opened with All My Loving. They followed with Till There Was You. A caption appeared on screen reading Sorry Girls, He's Married over John Lennon. The broadcast drew more than 73 million viewers. It held a rating of 45.3 and a 60 share.
George Harrison fell ill during rehearsals for the second show. Lead guitarist George Harrison was confined to the hotel recovering from strep throat. Road manager Neil Aspinall stood in for him alongside an Ed Sullivan Show staffer. The band flew to Miami Beach on February 13. They stayed at the Hotel Deauville where they rehearsed in the basement. On the evening of the second show, a crush of people nearly stopped them from reaching the stage. Police formed a wedge to clear a path. The band began playing She Loves You seconds after reaching their instruments. John Lennon played a new Rickenbacker 325 guitar for this performance. Company executives had noticed the poor condition of his original instrument during the first show. The audience for this show reached about 70 million viewers.
The production team faced significant logistical challenges during these broadcasts. An elaborate set change required time between acts. Magician Fred Kaps performed pre-recorded material to allow for this transition. Paul McCartney later remarked that John Lennon's microphone volume was too low during the first broadcast. Equipment issues plagued the early performances. The band had to navigate tight schedules and changing venues across multiple cities. They moved from New York to Washington D.C. then to Miami Beach within days. Security concerns grew as crowds became larger than expected. Police intervention became necessary just to get the musicians onto the stage. These hurdles tested the coordination between the band and CBS staff.
Commercial success followed immediately after the initial appearance. The Beatles sold 2.5 million records in the country in the month following February 9. By early April, they held all top five spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Capitol Records had originally planned to release I Want To Hold Your Hand on the 16th of January 1964. Instead, they rushed it out three weeks ahead of schedule. The song reached number one on the 25th of January 1964. This timing coincided with their arrival in the United States. The surge in sales demonstrated the massive demand generated by television exposure. Critics noted the unusual strength of audience reactions compared to previous musical acts.
Critics have recognized these appearances as a watershed cultural moment for Americans in the 1960s. The Museum of Television and Radio reported that the February 9 performance was one of its most requested clips in 1994. Ron Simon, the museum's curator, stated that cross-cultural phenomena came together here. Commentators attribute the help in healing national trauma from John F. Kennedy's assassination in November 1963. Reverend Billy Graham dismissed Beatlemania as a passing phase despite tuning in. Many musicians cited the show as inspiration for becoming artists. Nancy Wilson recalled lightning striking her sister Ann and herself during the broadcast. She described it as a huge event comparable to the lunar landing.
Paul McCartney returned to the Ed Sullivan Theater in 1992 and again in 2009. He performed on the building's exterior marquee during both visits. In February 2014, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr gave a joint interview with David Letterman at the theater. CBS News hosted a roundtable discussion there on February 9, marking the 50th anniversary. Anthony Mason moderated the panel featuring Pattie Boyd and Nile Rodgers among others. Korean pop band BTS filmed black-and-white segments for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on the 15th of May 2019. They wore suits similar to those worn by the Beatles. American indie rock band Boygenius performed on Saturday Night Live on the 11th of November 2023. Their set included a Ludwig drum kit mirroring the Beatles' own logo.
