Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW Publishing)
In the quiet darkness of a New York City research laboratory on the 24th of August 2011, a gray rat and four green turtles were about to change the course of comic book history. This was not the origin story most fans knew, where a wise old rat simply found four baby turtles in a sewer and raised them. Instead, the IDW Publishing series introduced a tragic, mythic backstory that redefined the entire franchise. Hamato Yoshi, a member of the Foot Clan in feudal Japan, had witnessed the ruthless cruelty of his leader, Oroku Saki. When Yoshi tried to save his wife Tang Shen and their four sons from Saki's wrath, he was marked as a traitor. Saki ordered the execution of Yoshi's entire family, and centuries later, their spirits were reincarnated in a modern laboratory owned by the scientist Baxter Stockman. There, they were transformed by alien mutagen into intelligent, humanoid beings, with Yoshi becoming Splinter and his sons becoming the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This new origin story, which debuted in the first issue of the ongoing series, set the stage for a narrative that would span over a decade and explore themes of redemption, family, and the consequences of ancient sins.
The Creative Team And The Longest Run
The creative team behind the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series was a powerhouse of talent that would eventually produce the longest-running comic book series in the franchise's history. Kevin Eastman, one of the original co-creators of the Turtles, returned to collaborate on the plot and page layouts, working alongside writer Tom Waltz and artist Dan Duncan. Their work began in April 2011 when IDW Publishing acquired the license to publish new collections of older Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics from Nickelodeon, as well as a new ongoing series. The first issue of the new series was released on August 24 that year, marking the beginning of a journey that would see the series surpass the 27-year run of Archie Comics' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, which had run from 1988 to 1995. In 2017, issue #73 of the main ongoing series was published, making it the longest-running comic in the franchise's history. The series continued to evolve, with Sophie Campbell taking over as the sole lead writer starting from issue #101, and later, Jason Aaron taking the mantle in 2024. The series' longevity was a testament to the creative team's ability to balance the core elements of the Turtles' story with new, complex narratives that kept readers engaged for over a decade.
The City At War And The Mutant Town
The narrative of the IDW series took a dramatic turn with the City at War arc, which concluded with issue #100 in 2019. This storyline saw the world's public become aware of the existence of mutants following a mutagen bomb attack by Old Hob on the New York populace during Baxter Stockman's inauguration as the city's new mayor. In response, a ghetto called Mutant Town was erected in the heart of Manhattan to quarantine the mutants, with Hob and his Mutanimals exercising loose political control over its inhabitants. The Turtles and their friends united to make Mutant Town both a better place to live in and a hub of tolerance and communication with the outside world. However, new conflicts began to emerge, including the birth of a daughter to Zom, which hailing a new era for the Triceratons, but also stirring hostility in the radical Utrom Ch'rell. The story also introduced Lita, a mutant albino turtle child the Turtles took in, whose future self was revealed to become a time traveler under time mistress Renet and had traveled to the present to stop the Turtles from splitting up in the future. The Punk Frogs, a street gang of mutant frogs, attacked the Turtles and burned the dojo, believing that they took away one of their members, Bonnie. A mad mutant surgeon by the name of Jasper Barlow experimented on mutants to make them more human, kidnapping Bonnie as part of her experiments (who becomes Venus, a turtle with psychic powers) and eventually resorting to inhumane methods to become human again. The Rat King, a member of the Pantheon, was eager to see his family's power game brought to a conclusion and attempted to unleash the Armageddon Game upon the world, a conflict that involved every major character up to that point. The outcome of the Armageddon Game was the downfall of both Krang and Ch'rell, the destruction of Mutant Town's borders, and the banishment of all the Pantheons from the world. During it, Donatello traveled to the future and discovered Armaggon, a monster that can devour and erase timelines. He became obsessed with stopping the monster and inadvertently created it while traveling through space and time. With Venus' help and sacrifice, Donatello was able to stop Armaggon and ensure that his family won't be erased from history.

Raphael became a drifter and eventually ended up in San Quentin Prison, Michelangelo became an actor in Japan, Leonardo sought enlightenment through yogic living, and Donatello got captured and put in a safari with other mutants while reeling from the trauma he endured after fighting Armaggon. Framed for murdering the warden of the prison Raphael was incarcerated in, the Turtles were forced to come together as a family once again, and were eventually exonerated by April, their allies, and supporters while also dealing with problems including Hieronymus Hale, a lawyer who was placed in charge of the city by Karai as the new District Attorney after his parents were killed by mutants, but was mutated by her for drawing too much public attention to the Turtles instead of merely distracting them. Karai herself strives to learn more about magic and the supernatural to defeat those she perceives as challengers to her rulership of the Foot Clan, including the Turtles. To this purpose, she allows herself to be possessed by an enigmatic being she calls The Wanderer, which results in a constant struggle for her mind. The Shredder returns from an extradimensional sojourn, only to learn that a former protegee has usurped control over the New York Foot Clan and prepares to construct an paradimensional bomb, forcing him to join forces with former enemies to meet this threat. Jennika dons a mechanical suit and becomes the vigilante Nightwatcher, unraveling a crime ring taking advantage of the disadvantaged civilians of Mutant Town, until the suit - actually a golem - develops a mind of its own. Hob is trying to establish a new mutant colony on North Brother Island. After Splinter helps his sons from the beyond in their time of need, the Turtles try to contact him, thereby accidentally drawing him back to the world of the living. Bereft of his memory, but driven by his instinctive love for his sons, Splinter assumes the identity of an ujigami and begins eliminating threats to his family's safety. Savanti Romero, a being from an alternate reality, takes over the Battle Nexus in order to eliminate the Turtles, as well as their alternate counterparts, using enemies from their past, present, and alternate realities, including Slash, Ninjara, Alopex, the Mirage incarnation of the Shredder, and the 2012 incarnation of Metalhead.
