IDW Publishing acquired the license in April 2011 following Nickelodeon's purchase of the franchise in October 2009. The first issue of this new series was released on August 24 that year.
Kevin Eastman collaborated on the plot and page layouts alongside writer Tom Waltz and artist Dan Duncan. This initial creative team established the rebooted story and characters for the fifth comic book series in the franchise's history.
Donatello traveled to the future and inadvertently created a monster called Armaggon while trying to stop it from erasing timelines. With Venus' help and sacrifice Donatello stopped the monster ensuring his family would not be erased from history.
The current volume ended with issue 150 as announced on the 12th of January 2024. A new volume launched in July 2024 with Jason Aaron taking over as head writer.
A crossover series ran from the 9th of December 2015 to the 11th of May 2016. Another sequel series featuring a merged reality ran from the 1st of May 2019 to the 2nd of October 2019.
