IDW Publishing released the first issue of its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series on the 24th of August 2011. IDW acquired the license to publish new TMNT comics from Nickelodeon in April 2011, making it the first new comic incarnation of the Turtles after the franchise's sale to Nickelodeon in October 2009.
The initial creative team consisted of Kevin Eastman, one of the Turtles' original co-creators, who collaborated on the plot and page layouts; writer Tom Waltz; and artist Dan Duncan. Starting with issue #101, writer and artist Sophie Campbell became the sole lead writer.
The IDW series introduces a reincarnation mythology in which Hamato Yoshi and his four sons were murdered in feudal Japan by Oroku Saki. Their spirits were reborn in modern times as a rat and four turtles inside a research lab called Stock Gen, where contact with alien mutagen transformed them into humanoid beings.
In 2017, with the publication of issue #73, the IDW series surpassed Archie Comics' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, which ran from 1988 to 1995, to become the longest-running comic book series in the franchise's history.
Volume 1 concluded with issue #150 in April 2024. The first 100 issues built toward an eight-part arc called "City at War," and issues #101-150 were set in Mutant Town, a quarantine zone erected in Manhattan after a mutagen bomb exposed the existence of mutants to the public.
Jason Aaron took over as head writer for the 2024 relaunch, announced on the 12th of January 2024. The first five issues each featured a different artist, including Joelle Jones, Rafael Albuquerque, Cliff Chiang, Chris Burnham, and Darick Robertson, with Juan Ferreyra drawing the second story arc beginning with issue six.
