  • On the 8th of February 2026, No.1 Sentai Gozyuger aired its final episode. It was the 49th season of Super Sentai, a Japanese franchise of superhero team shows produced by Toei Company and aired by TV Asahi. The run reached back to 1975. The shows feature live-action heroes and colorful special effects, a genre called tokusatsu. In North America, most viewers know them under a different name: Power Rangers. This documentary follows three questions. Where did the team formula come from, and who assembled its pieces? How did footage from Tokyo end up on American children's television? And what does it mean for a franchise this long-lived to step aside?

  • Wrist-worn and hand-held devices are the first tool of every Super Sentai team. With them, ordinary people transform into superheroes, gaining color-coded uniforms, signature weapons, sidearms, and fighting skills. Their enemies are otherworldly supervillains who threaten to take over the Earth.

The monster of the week gives a typical episode its shape. The heroes foil the villains' plan and defeat an army of enemy soldiers along with that monster. Then an enlarged version of the monster appears. The heroes finish it a second time with their mecha, the giant robots of the franchise.

Denshi Sentai Denjiman, the fourth series, and Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan, the fifth, are the one pair that shares a fictional universe. Even then, only one cast member appears in both. Every other series builds its own world. On special occasions, such as the Super Sentai VS series where two teams meet, earlier teams return without concern for whether their settings fit together. Memorial year projects work the same way.

The kabuki play Shiranami Gonin Otoko, first performed in 1862, stands behind the franchise's most recognizable ritual. Teams often announce their names and titles before and after transforming, a custom called the roll call. Kabuki elements passed into 20th century television through the jidaigeki genre. Kazutoshi Takahashi, a stunt coordinator on Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, is credited with bringing the roll call to the first Super Sentai. That puts the ritual's ancestry more than a century before the first team took the screen.

  • Shotaro Ishinomori had already made his name with the 1971-1973 Kamen Rider TV series and the long-running manga Cyborg 009 when he created the first two Super Sentai series. Himitsu Sentai Gorenger ran from 1975 to 1977 and filled 84 episodes. J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai followed in 1977 with 35 episodes. In 1978, Toei put the franchise on hiatus.

Marvel Comics enters the story after that pause. Toei collaborated with Marvel on a live-action Spider-Man series, which is regarded as the introduction of giant robots to tokusatsu hero shows. The robot concept carried into the next Toei and Marvel co-production, Battle Fever J in 1979. That series was originally developed around Captain America.

Denshi Sentai Denjiman and Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan were also considered co-productions. Toei Company has produced every series after them on its own. Battle Fever J, with its Captain America origins, ran for 52 episodes and ended in January 1980.

  • Super Sentai Zukan, a reference book published by Tokuma Shoten in 1981, is one of the earliest uses of the name Super Sentai for the franchise. It appeared while Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan was on the air, and it counted Ishinomori's two series among the shows. Not everyone agreed on where the line began. The first episode of Kousoku Sentai Turboranger celebrated what it called the first ten teams. It left out the two Ishinomori series and recognized Battle Fever J as the first.

Early guidebooks and soundtrack collections were looser still. Some listed Ninja Captor, Kikaider, Daitetsujin 17, and Space Sheriff Gavan, though none had an established link to Super Sentai.

In 1993, during Gosei Sentai Dairanger, the name Super Century All Sentai gathered the two Ishinomori series and the Super Sentai series under one banner. Then in 2000, during Mirai Sentai Timeranger, the franchise was officially rebranded as Super Sentai Series. Himitsu Sentai Gorenger and J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai were formally classified under it. Space Sheriff Gavan, once an outsider in the guidebooks, later met a Sentai team on screen in the 2012 film Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger vs. Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie.

  • Honolulu's KIKU-TV is where the road to America begins. In the 1970s the station had success with Android Kikaider, marketed as Kikaida, and Kamen Rider V3. Several Super Sentai series, including Himitsu Sentai Gorenger and Battle Fever J, followed into the Hawaiian market. JN Productions broadcast them in Japanese with English subtitles.

Adaptations for the major networks stumbled at first. In 1985, Marvel Comics produced a pilot for an American version of Super Sentai, but the major American TV networks rejected it. In 1986, Saban Productions made a pilot from Choudenshi Bioman titled Bio Man. A year later, some episodes of Kagaku Sentai Dynaman were dubbed and aired as a parody on Night Flight, a show on the USA Network.

The breakthrough came in 1993, when Saban Entertainment adapted 1992's Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the Fox Kids programming block. Saban combined the original Japanese action footage with new footage of American actors for the story sequences. Nearly every Super Sentai series since has become a new season of Power Rangers.

Ownership of Power Rangers then changed hands several times. In 2002, Saban sold the franchise to Disney's Buena Vista division, which owned it until 2010. During those years it aired on ABC Kids, ABC Family, Jetix, and Toon Disney. On the 12th of May 2010, Saban bought it back and moved it to Nickelodeon, starting in 2011 with Power Rangers Samurai. On the 1st of May 2018, toy company Hasbro announced that it had acquired the franchise from Saban Capital Group for $522 million.

Super Sentai itself reached North American viewers directly later. On the 25th of July 2014, Shout! Factory announced a DVD release of Zyuranger, and it has since been the official distributor. As of 2024 it had released every later series up to Dekaranger, plus Jetman and Fiveman. Shout! TV has offered episodes on demand since 2016, and the free streaming service Tubi carries them too.

The chain of adaptations began to loosen in 2023. Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, released on Netflix, was the first Power Rangers series that did not directly adapt a Super Sentai series. It used mostly original costumes adapted from Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger, the basis of its predecessor, Power Rangers Dino Fury. On the 2nd of April 2025, Toei president and CEO Fumio Yoshimura revealed that Toei would not take part in an upcoming live-action Power Rangers reboot from Hasbro and 20th Century Television.

  • Choushinsei Flashman was the first Super Sentai series to reach South Korea, where it aired as Jigu Bangwidae Flash Man, meaning Earth Defence Squadron Flashman. The video company Daeyung Panda released it on video in 1989. Hikari Sentai Maskman and Chodenshi Bioman followed. Through the 1990s, Dai Sentai Goggle Five, Dengeki Sentai Changeman, Choujyu Sentai Liveman, and Kousoku Sentai Turboranger also came out on video. In the 2000s and early 2010s, broadcasters including Tooniverse, Cartoon Network South Korea, and Nickelodeon South Korea aired the series a year after Japan. They changed the titles to Power Rangers.

Voice-over dubs carried Super Sentai through Vietnam for years. In 2003, Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger became the first season released there on VCD and DVD, and it was a hit. Later seasons ran on local and cable TV. More recently, fans have subtitled the newest seasons and shared them online.

Bandai Namco has sold 30.89 million Super Sentai shape-changing model robots. Outside Japan, licensed merchandise reached $6 billion in retail sales from 1993 to 1999. Yearly retail sales of that merchandise peaked among the listed years at $548 million in 2017, then fell to $281 million in 2018. Bandai Namco's robot count starts in 1979, the year Battle Fever J premiered.

  • Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger, a Toei parody on BS Asahi, ran for two seasons between 2012 and 2013. The High School Heroes mini-series aired on TV Asahi in 2021, starring Bishounen, a Johnny's Entertainment unit. Both are set in worlds where Super Sentai exists as a television series. Their protagonists are fans who become heroes themselves.

Naoko Takeuchi used Super Sentai as inspiration when she created the Sailor Soldiers of Sailor Moon. Akira Toriyama invented the Ginyu Force for the Dragon Ball manga after seeing his children watch the shows. Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers, called Ronin Warriors in the English dub, follows five young warriors whose mystical armor and weapons let them transform. Digimon Frontier gave five kids, eventually six, devices called D-tectors that held the spirits of ancient heroes known as the Ten Legendary Warriors.

Video games borrowed the look as well. In the Level 5 game Jeanne d'Arc on the PSP, the title character and others can transform into armored warriors. She is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese and Kari Wahlgren in English. In the PSP prequel to Kingdom Hearts, the characters Terra, Aqua, and Ventus transform into magical armor.

Satire and homage reached beyond Japan. Gainax produced a Japanese fan film in 1982 as a tribute. The Thai series Sport Ranger aired in 2006. Jushi Sentai France Five, a French online mini-series, was released in six instalments between 2000 and 2013. In 2013, Gainax produced EA's Rock, a 13-episode miniseries of live-action shorts about former members of a fighting group. The television program Omoikkiri Ii!! produced Sparanger, a series of spa and onsen features starring tokusatsu and drama actors. The manga and anime Love After World Domination satirizes multicolored heroes in spandex suits who fight a world-domination organization.

The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World is a manga and anime about a team leader transported to another world after sacrificing himself in a final battle. It flashes back to his time leading the Kizuna Five, and veteran Sentai actors voice the other members of that team.

  • On the 23rd of November 2025, TV Asahi announced that Super Sentai would go on hiatus after the finale of No.1 Sentai Gozyuger. Until then, the series had aired alongside Kamen Rider in the Super Hero Time programming block on Sunday mornings. A new tokusatsu franchise, Project R.E.D., short for Records of Extraordinary Dimensions, took that place in February 2026.

Toei's Head of Production, Shin-Ichiro Shirakura, stated that there were no immediate plans for a return. He added that a comeback of Super Sentai in the future was not out of the question.

The pause did not end the story on screen at once. The most recent entry in the franchise's list of V-Cinema releases, a separate line of video films, is the 2026 title No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger vs. Boonboomger. It pairs the final team with the one that came before it.
