Steven Tyler
Steven Tyler, the singer born Steven Victor Tallarico, saw his touring career end in August 2024. That month, his band Aerosmith announced that it was retiring from the road. The reason was Tyler's voice. He had fractured his larynx and injured his vocal cords at a concert in September 2023, and he could not recover enough to keep performing.
The loss was heavy because that voice was the heart of the act. Tyler led the Boston-based rock band and also played keyboards, harmonica and percussion. He was known for powerful high screams and a wide vocal range. On stage he wore colorful, sometimes androgynous outfits and makeup, with scarves hanging from his microphone stand.
How did a boy from Yonkers, New York, become that singer? How did a band that nearly destroyed itself climb back to the top of the charts? And what did the journey leave behind, for Tyler and for the people near him?
Felix Czarnyszewicz was born in 1892 in Klichaw, a place in today's Belarus. He emigrated to the United States in 1914 and changed his surname to Blancha. There he married Bessie Elliott, and the couple had four children, including a daughter named Susan. Susan would become Steven Tyler's mother.
Tyler himself said on a number of occasions that his maternal grandfather was Ukrainian. The genealogist Megan Smolenyak established that the grandfather was in fact Polish. Felix's brother Florian Czarnyszewicz became a well-known Polish writer and emigrated to Argentina. His best-known novel, Nadberezeńcy, describes the fate of Poles living between the Berezina and Dnieper rivers from 1911 to 1920.
Steven Victor Tallarico was born on the 26th of March 1948 at the Stuyvesant Polyclinic in Manhattan. The family moved to the Bronx when he was three. In 1957 they settled at 100 Pembrook Drive in northeast Yonkers, when he was about nine. His father, Victor A. Tallarico, was a classical musician and pianist who taught music at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. His mother, Susan Ray, worked as a secretary, and he has one older sister, Lynda.
Tyler's paternal grandfather, Giovanni Tallarico, came from Cotronei in Calabria, Italy. On the genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?, Tyler learned that his maternal great-great-great-grandfather Robert Elliot was part African-American and part European-American.
Roosevelt High School on Tuckahoe Road stood about a mile from the Tallarico home in Yonkers. Tyler was expelled just before graduation because of marijuana use. He later graduated from the Quintano School for Young Professionals.
In 1964, Tyler formed a band in Yonkers called the Strangeurs, which was later renamed Chain Reaction. At 17 he spent time in Greenwich Village, where the highlight was a Rolling Stones concert. He and his friends, he said, "hung around for a while, buzzing like crazy just because we got to touch them." People told him he looked just like Mick Jagger, and a photo in the band's autobiography, Walk This Way, shows Tyler standing behind Jagger outside a hotel.
During this period Tyler also sang backing vocals on The Left Banke Too, the second album by the baroque pop group the Left Banke.
In 1969, Tyler went to a local rock show in Sunapee, New Hampshire. On stage, a group called the Jam Band featured Joe Perry on guitar and Tom Hamilton on bass. Tyler later said he was struck by their raw power and attitude. He had already written a song that would become an Aerosmith signature, "Dream On".
Around 1970, Tyler, Perry and Hamilton decided to form a band. Tyler had played drums in many earlier bands at school, yet he insisted on being the frontman and lead singer. Joey Kramer, an old acquaintance from New York, was recruited on drums. Driven by ambition to become full-time musicians, the group moved to the Boston area.
The band shared a home at 1325 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, where they wrote, rehearsed and relaxed between shows. They reportedly spent afternoons getting high and watching Three Stooges reruns. One day they met to find a name. Kramer said that in school he had scribbled the word "aerosmith" all over his notebooks.
The word had popped into his head after he heard Harry Nilsson's album Aerial Ballet, whose jacket showed a circus performer jumping from a biplane. His bandmates were unimpressed at first. They thought he meant the Sinclair Lewis novel they had read in high school English. "No, not Arrowsmith," Kramer explained. "A-E-R-O...Aerosmith." The band also considered "the Hookers" and "Spike Jones", and at some point before Christmas weekend of 1971 they were known as "Fox Chase".
The band hired Ray Tabano, a childhood friend of Tyler, as rhythm guitarist. Aerosmith played its first gig on the 6th of November 1970 at Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon, Massachusetts. In 1971, Brad Whitford, a Berklee School of Music student and former member of Earth Inc., replaced Tabano.
Aerosmith signed with Columbia in mid-1972 for a reported $125,000. Their debut album, Aerosmith, came out in January 1973 and peaked at number 166. "Dream On" was the highest-charting single, at number 59. Tracks such as "Mama Kin" and "Walkin' the Dog" became live staples and drew rock radio airplay. The album went gold at first and eventually sold two million copies.
Get Your Wings followed in 1974, after constant touring. It was the first of a string of multi-platinum albums produced by Jack Douglas. Rock radio played "Same Old Song and Dance" and "Train Kept A-Rollin'", a cover of a Yardbirds recording.
Toys in the Attic arrived in 1975. Critics had derided Aerosmith as Rolling Stones knockoffs, much as they had treated their fellow Leber-Krebs act the New York Dolls. This album showed the band was unique and talented in its own right. "Sweet Emotion" became the first Top 40 hit. A re-release of "Dream On" then reached number 6, the band's best-charting single of the decade. "Walk This Way" was re-released in 1976 and reached the Top 10 in early 1977.
Rocks, released in 1976, went platinum swiftly. Music historian Greg Prato judged it the band at its rawest. It produced two Top 40 hits, "Last Child" and "Back in the Saddle", plus the charting ballad "Home Tonight".
Draw the Line, from 1977, was recorded under the weight of the band's excesses. Its title track charted just short of the Top 40, and "Kings and Queens" also charted. On "Bright Light Fright", guitarist Perry sang lead because Tyler lacked enthusiasm for the song. It was the first Aerosmith track without Tyler as lead vocalist.
Tyler and Perry earned the nickname the Toxic Twins for their legendary intake of stimulants and heroin. The fast-paced life of touring, recording, living together and using drugs had begun to take its toll on the whole band. From July 1979 to April 1984, the five-man lineup that began in 1971 was broken.
Night in the Ruts, released in November 1979, sold only enough to go gold at the time. It reached platinum by 1994. Its only single, a cover of the Shangri-Las song "Remember (Walking in the Sand)", peaked at number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band now played smaller venues than before, and Tyler's drug use was hurting his performance and his songwriting.
In 1980, Tyler hit bottom in Portland, Maine. He collapsed on stage during a show and did not get up for the rest of the set. That year the band released its first compilation, Greatest Hits. It charted modestly at first but became the band's best-selling album in the United States, with 12 million copies sold.
In the fall of 1980, a serious motorcycle accident left Tyler hospitalized for two months. He could not tour or record well into 1981. Rock in a Hard Place came out on the 27th of August 1982 and reached number 32 on the Billboard 200. Only the single "Lightning Strikes" charted, peaking at number 21 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
As on the previous tour, the band could not book large venues and filled clubs and theaters. At a homecoming arena show in Worcester, Massachusetts, Tyler and Perry got high backstage. Tyler was so intoxicated that he collapsed on stage again.
Tyler later put numbers on the fall. "I made like $4 or $5 million by 1979, and by '83... I lost it all," he recalled. He remembered looking at other ruined rock stars and thinking that it would never happen to him. Then, he said, he forgot about reality and just loved shooting dope and coke.
In 1984 the band staged a reunion tour called the Back in the Saddle Tour, which led to the live album Classics Live II. Concerts were well attended, yet several incidents dogged the tour, mostly blamed on drug abuse by band members. The group signed to Geffen Records and began working on a comeback. Done with Mirrors, released in 1985, drew some positive reviews but only went gold and produced no hit single. Even so, the band was a popular concert attraction again and toured on the album well into 1986.
In 1986, Tyler and Perry appeared on Run-D.M.C.'s cover of "Walk This Way", an unprecedented blend of rock and hip hop. The song reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its frequently aired video introduced Aerosmith to a new generation and resurrected the band's career.
That same year, Tyler completed a successful drug rehabilitation program. His fellow band members, a doctor and manager Tim Collins had staged an intervention. The other members completed their own programs over the next couple of years.
Permanent Vacation arrived in August 1987 and sold 5 million copies in the United States, the band's best seller in over a decade. All three singles, "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)", "Angel" and "Rag Doll", reached the Top 20. In his autobiography, Tyler called it "the first one we ever did sober." On the tour with labelmates Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith struggled to stay clean amid that band's well-publicized drug use.
Pump, released in September 1989, did even better. It had three Top Ten singles, "Love in an Elevator", "Janie's Got a Gun" and "What It Takes", plus the Top 30 "The Other Side". The album eventually sold 7 million copies and ranked as the fourth-bestselling album of 1990. Its videos ran in regular rotation on MTV. "Janie's Got a Gun" won the band its first Grammy, for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Its video won two Video Music Awards and was ranked among the 100 greatest videos by Rolling Stone, MTV and VH1.
On the 21st of February 1990, the band appeared in a "Wayne's World" sketch on Saturday Night Live, debating the fall of communism and the Soviet Union. E! later ranked it the number-one moment in the show's history. MTV Unplugged aired the band's performance on the 11th of August 1990. The 12-month Pump Tour ended that October with the band's first shows in Australia.
Get a Grip, released in 1993, became the band's first album to debut at number 1. It sold 7 million copies in two and a half years and over 20 million worldwide. Critics were unimpressed by the focus on power ballads, but "Cryin'", "Amazing" and "Crazy" were huge on radio and MTV. Tyler's daughter Liv Tyler appeared in the "Crazy" video. The band won Grammys for "Livin' on the Edge" in 1994 and "Crazy" in 1995.
Nine Lives came out in March 1997 to mixed reviews. It fell down the charts at first but had a long life and went double platinum in the United States. "Pink" won the band its fourth Grammy in 1999. The tour that followed ran over two years and was plagued by problems, including a leg injury Tyler suffered at a concert.
In the middle of those setbacks, the band released "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" in 1998. Diane Warren wrote the love song for the film Armageddon, which starred Liv Tyler. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there four weeks. It remains Aerosmith's only number 1 single, and it earned an Academy Award nomination in 1999.
On the 22nd of March 2006, it was announced that Tyler needed throat surgery. The Rockin' the Joint Tour, launched on the 30th of October 2005, had seen its dates canceled one by one. After that announcement, all the remaining dates were canceled. Tyler had argued and yelled right after a two-hour show in Florida and woke the next morning with a hoarse voice. His publicist said doctors had advised him to rest his voice.
The cause was a ruptured blood vessel in his throat. Dr. Steven M. Zeitels, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation, sealed it with a laser. In Tyler's words, "He just took a laser and zapped the blood vessel." After a few weeks of rest, the band entered the studio on the 20th of May 2006. Tyler returned to the stage on the 3rd and the 4th of July 2006 with Perry and the Boston Pops Orchestra at the Hatch Shell in Boston. They sang "Dream On", "Walk This Way" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing". The surgery was featured in 2007 on the National Geographic Channel series Incredible Human Machine.
In a September 2006 interview with Access Hollywood, Tyler revealed that he had lived with hepatitis C for 11 years. He was diagnosed in 2003 and underwent extensive treatment through 2006, including 11 months of interferon therapy that he called agony.
On the 21st of May 2008, Tyler checked into the Las Encinas Hospital rehabilitation clinic in Pasadena, California, to recover from multiple leg surgeries. He said the pain of the foot repair was greater than he had anticipated and that he needed a safe place to shut off his phone.
On the 5th of August 2009, during the Guitar Hero Aerosmith Tour, Tyler fell off a stage near Sturgis, South Dakota. He injured his head and neck, broke his shoulder and was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
In October 2011, TMZ reported that Tyler had slipped in his hotel shower in Paraguay. He injured his face and lost several teeth, and the scheduled show was postponed a night. When he did perform, he proudly displayed a broken tooth on a string around his neck. Then he removed his sunglasses to reveal a nasty black eye.
Tyler has publicly acknowledged his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. In a 2019 interview he credited his bandmates and management for his sobriety: "I am grateful and owe a thanks to them for my sobriety." Yet on the 24th of May 2022, the band announced that he had checked himself into a rehab facility. Tyler had relapsed after foot surgery to prepare for the Deuces Are Wild residency, and the June and July dates were canceled.
Super Bowl XXXV opened the new century for Aerosmith. The band co-headlined the halftime show, titled "The Kings of Rock and Pop", with NSYNC. Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly made appearances. In March 2001 the band released its 13th studio album, Just Push Play, which quickly went platinum. Dodge commercials used the title track. Aerosmith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later that same month, and MTV gave the band its mtvICON award in 2002.
On the 10th of November 2009, Joe Perry confirmed that Tyler had quit Aerosmith to pursue a solo career. The same night, Tyler joined the Joe Perry Project at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza and sang "Walk This Way". He told the crowd, "not quitting Aerosmith." Tyler later said that trouble with his bandmates was the main reason he signed up for American Idol.
On the 22nd of September 2010, Fox confirmed that Tyler would replace Simon Cowell as a judge for the tenth season of American Idol. He sat beside Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez, and his first show aired on the 19th of January 2011. On the 12th of July 2012, he announced that he would leave after two seasons. Keith Urban replaced him.
Tyler's autobiography, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?, appeared on the 3rd of May 2011. It reached number two on The New York Times hardcover nonfiction list. In 2015 he signed with Scott Borchetta's Dot Records for a country album. The lead single, "Love Is Your Name", came out on the 13th of May 2015. To reach country listeners, he appeared as himself on the drama series Nashville and sang "Crazy" with Hayden Panettiere. His debut solo album, We're All Somebody from Somewhere, followed on the 15th of July 2016.
Aerosmith kept touring through all of it. The Global Warming Tour in 2013 took the band to Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines and Singapore. It was their first Australian shows in 23 years. After the Aero-Vederci Baby! farewell tour of Europe in 2017, the band announced a Las Vegas residency called Deuces Are Wild, booked for 50 shows from April 2019 to June 2020.
Tyler's screen work began with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1978. He voiced himself in The Simpsons episode "Flaming Moe's" in 1991 and played an Elf Lieutenant and Elf Singer in The Polar Express in 2004. He also sang with a wide range of partners. These included Bob Marley on "Roots, Rock, Reggae", Pink on "Misery", and Dolly Parton on "I Want You Back" in 2023.
On the 15th of September 2007, at New Hampshire International Speedway, Tyler announced Dirico Motorcycles. He designed the bikes, Mark Dirico engineered them, and AC Custom Motorcycles in Manchester, New Hampshire built them. In early 2013, Hawaii Senate Bill 465, called the Steven Tyler Act, would let public figures sue paparazzi for unwanted photographs. Tyler and other celebrities lobbied for it.
Rolling Stone included Tyler in its list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. In 2013, Tyler and Perry received the ASCAP Founders Award and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A quieter honor came in 2011, when Tyler earned an Emmy nomination for voicing the Mad Hatter on The Wonder Pets: Adventures in Wonderland.
In his 2011 memoir, Tyler addressed the way he presents himself. He has long cultivated an androgynous persona on and off stage, with flamboyant clothes and makeup. He wrote that he had been misquoted as saying he was more female than male. His own version, he said, was closer to half and half, and he liked the idea of being akin to the eternal girl.
Tyler's first famous child was born in 1977. Actress Liv Tyler is the daughter of Tyler and fashion model Bebe Buell. Buell at first claimed that Todd Rundgren was the father, to protect her daughter from Tyler's drug addiction. Through Liv's marriage to the British musician Royston Langdon and her relationship with manager David Gardner, Tyler has three grandchildren.
In 1978, Tyler married Cyrinda Foxe, an ex-Warhol model and former wife of New York Dolls singer David Johansen. Their daughter, the model Mia Tyler, was born on the 22nd of December 1978. They divorced in 1987. Foxe published a memoir in 1997 and died of a brain tumor in 2002.
On the 28th of May 1988, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tyler married clothing designer Teresa Barrick. They had a daughter, Chelsea, born around 1989, and a son, Taj, born around 1991. The couple announced their separation in February 2005, and the divorce was finalized in January 2006. Tyler began a relationship with Erin Brady in 2006. They became engaged in December 2011 and called it off in January 2013.
In 1973, Tyler obtained guardianship of 16-year-old Julia Holcomb so that she could live with him in Boston. They dated and took drugs together for three years. Tyler was 25 when they met. Pressures behind their split included the age gap, a withdrawn marriage proposal, a house fire and a planned pregnancy that ended in an abortion. Tyler worried that smoke from the fire, as well as drugs, might cause birth defects. He later wrote, "I was pretty devastated." Holcomb's story features in the documentary Look Away, which examines sexual abuse in the rock music industry.
Holcomb later took the name Julia Misley. In December 2022 she filed suit, and in February 2023 Tyler was formally named a defendant. She alleges that he sexually assaulted her and forced her to undergo the abortion. She says he used his fame and status to groom, manipulate and exploit her over three years, beginning when she was 16. In a March 2023 motion to dismiss, Tyler said the relationship was consensual and that he had immunity because he was her legal guardian. His claim of immunity drew scrutiny and perplexed several attorneys with expertise in sexual assault. Misley's lawyer accused Tyler of "gaslighting". After the documentary's release, Courtney Love said on Instagram that Tyler had also "adopted" another 13-year-old girl in a similar fashion.
In 2015, Tyler launched Janie's Fund, named after the Aerosmith track "Janie's Got a Gun". The fund provides protection and counseling for young female victims of abuse, and Tyler has helped raise over $2.4 million for it since then. Janie's House, established in 2017 in Atlanta, offers shelter for victims of abuse or neglect. It has space for 30 live-in clients and 24-hour medical facilities.
