The Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine launched in 1987 as a publication for members of the official fan club. It served as a direct line between the studio and its most dedicated supporters during the late 1980s. The name changed to Star Wars Insider in 1994 to align with the release of Star Wars: TIE Fighter. This shift marked a transition from a closed group newsletter to a broader commercial product available to general audiences. The magazine grew alongside the franchise itself, adapting its identity to match new eras of storytelling.
Content And Format
Readers find stories, articles about the universe, letters, and the fan newsletter known as Bantha Tracks inside each issue. The pages often feature humorous comics and stories that provide comic relief amidst serious lore. A section called Dear 2-1B offered questions and answers before it was eventually removed from the lineup. Exclusive previews of upcoming projects appear regularly alongside excerpts from books and comics. Advertising fills space for both Star Wars merchandise and unrelated products, creating a diverse visual landscape on every page.Publishing History
Jonathan Wilkins currently edits the magazine while overseeing its content direction. The publication has passed through many different companies since its inception in 1987. Issues numbered one through twenty-two came directly from Lucasfilm under the original title. Fantastic Media took over production for issues twenty-three through fifty. Wizards of the Coast managed the run from issue fifty-one to sixty-one. Paizo Publishing handled issues sixty-two through seventy-six before IDG Entertainment stepped in for issues seventy-seven to ninety-two. Titan Magazines relaunched the series at Star Wars Celebration IV and continued publishing until issue two hundred thirty-seven.
