  Simon Patrick Keefe was born on the 24th of December 1968 in Leicester. His path through higher education took him from Cambridge to Boston University and finally Columbia University. He earned his doctorate at Columbia in 1997. That same year marked the start of his professional career with a lectureship at Christ Church, Oxford. The following year brought him to Queen's University Belfast for another lecture role. City, University of London offered him a professorship in music by 2003. This position led directly to his appointment as the James Rossiter Hoyle Chair of Music at the University of Sheffield in 2008. By 2024, he served a three-year term as president of the Royal Musical Association.
