Rose Byrne
Rose Byrne was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2026. She is the eighth Australian ever to earn a nomination in that category. The nomination was for If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, released in 2025. By then she had worked across Australian television, Hollywood epics, horror sequels and Broadway. What path leads from a Sydney suburb to that shortlist? And how did an actress known for heavy drama become one of the most requested names in Hollywood comedy?
Balmain, a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, is where Mary Rose Byrne was born on the 24th of July 1979. She was the youngest of four children of Jane and Robin Byrne. Her older siblings are a brother, George, and two sisters, Lucy and Alice. Her ancestry is Irish and Scottish. In a 2009 interview she said her mother was an atheist, while she and her father were agnostic. The Daily Telegraph described the family as close-knit, and it frequently kept her grounded as her career took off.
At the age of eight, encouraged by one of her sisters, Byrne joined the Australian Theatre for Young People. Her schooling ran through Balmain Public School and Hunters Hill High School. She finished at Bradfield Senior College for years 11 and 12.
Nepean, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the National Institute of Dramatic Art were among the major drama schools she auditioned for. None of them accepted her. She studied an arts degree at Sydney University instead, and she lived in the Sydney suburbs of Newtown and Bondi.
In 1999 she studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company, which David Mamet and William H. Macy developed. That training came well after her screen work had begun.
Dallas Doll, released in 1994, gave Byrne her first film role at the age of 15. Australian television followed through the 1990s. From 1995 she played Belinda O'Connor in 130 episodes of Echo Point, and in 1997 she appeared in Wildside.
In 1999 she played the love interest in the film Two Hands, opposite fellow up-and-coming actor Heath Ledger. She then appeared in My Mother Frank, an award-winning film from 2000. On stage, she starred in La Dispute and in Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters at the Sydney Theatre Company.
The Goddess of 1967, directed by Clara Law in 2000, gave Byrne her first leading film role. It won her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 57th Venice International Film Festival. In an interview after the award, she revealed that she had been surprised by her own performance before the win. She found the film confronting to watch because her acting seemed too depressing to her. She said that 'watching myself is confronting because I'm convinced I can't act and I want to get out, that's how insecure I am.'
In 2002 Byrne appeared briefly in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones as Dormé, handmaiden to Natalie Portman's Senator Padmé Amidala. The thriller City of Ghosts, with Matt Dillon, followed that year and marked her move into Hollywood.
She then flew to the UK to shoot I Capture the Castle in 2003. Tim Fywell directed this adaptation of Dodie Smith's 1948 novel. Byrne played Rose Mortmain, the elder sister of Romola Garai's Cassandra.
That same year she starred in three Australian comedies. One was The Night We Called It a Day, with Melanie Griffith and Dennis Hopper. Another was The Rage in Placid Lake, with Ben Lee, which earned her an AACTA Award nomination for Best Actress. The third was Take Away. The films opened to varying degrees of box office success.
In the epic drama Troy in 2004, Byrne played Briseis, the captured priestess presented to amuse Brad Pitt's Achilles. A review in Variety judged her character more a convenient invention than a woman who could turn Achilles' head and heart.
Wicker Park arrived the same year, with Josh Hartnett and Diane Kruger. Its director, Paul McGuigan, described Byrne as the best actress he had worked with. Her Troy co-star Peter O'Toole called her a 'beautiful, uncomplicated, simple, pure actress and a very nice girl'.
O'Toole and Byrne reunited in 2005 for the BBC drama Casanova, a three-episode production about the 18th century Italian adventurer Giacomo Casanova. Byrne played a young servant. In 2006 she played Gabrielle de Polastron, duchesse de Polignac and a friend of Marie Antoinette, in Sofia Coppola's film with Kirsten Dunst.
That year she also appeared in The Dead Girl, a critically acclaimed thriller directed by Karen Moncrieff. Her character, a medical examiner, thinks the dead woman she is preparing is her missing sister.
Danny Boyle's Sunshine and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later gave Byrne two studio science-fiction thrillers in 2007. She played a space vessel's pilot in Sunshine, alongside Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans. In 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to Boyle's 28 Days Later, she played an army medical officer. Sunshine flopped. 28 Weeks Later was a critical success and grossed over US$64.2 million globally.
Also in 2007, Byrne began playing Ellen Parsons, a bright young attorney, in the FX legal thriller Damages, alongside Glenn Close. Her performance was widely praised. She earned Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2009 and 2010. She was also nominated for Golden Globe Awards in 2008 and 2010. She appeared in all 59 episodes until the finale in September 2012.
In 2008 Byrne starred in the independent films Just Buried, directed by Chaz Thorne, and The Tender Hook, with Hugo Weaving. In 2009 she played the mother of a teen, alongside Nicolas Cage, in the sci-fi thriller Knowing. It made US$186.5 million worldwide and received mixed reviews. Byrne said she had not yet become strategic about her film choices. 'You gravitate to where you want to go, but so much is out of your control,' she remarked.
After the success of Damages, Byrne asked her agents to send her out for comedies. 'I was doing all of this really heavy, dramatic stuff, and I just needed a break,' she said. She won the role of a scandalous pop star in Get Him to the Greek in 2010. Her character was the on-and-off girlfriend of a free-spirited rock star, and the film also starred Russell Brand and Jonah Hill.
Director Nicholas Stoller admitted that during her audition he wondered why she was there, because she seemed a very good but very serious actress. Then, he said, she destroyed the audition in the way someone from Saturday Night Live would. Byrne has said that she found the idea of being 'boxed in' insufferable. 'You have to be aggressive in this business,' she noted. The Hollywood Reporter later called her the most in-demand supporting actress for comedies. Get Him to the Greek grossed US$60.9 million in North America.
The year 2011 became a turning point for Byrne, with three high-profile theatrical films. It led to a run of three to four films per year. The first was James Wan's horror film Insidious. Byrne played a mother whose son inexplicably enters a comatose state and becomes a vessel for malevolent spirits in an astral realm. Insidious cost US$1.5 million to make, grossed US$97 million and began a franchise.
Bridesmaids brought her a very different role. She played the rich, beautiful, elite wife of the groom's boss, opposite Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey. It grossed US$26 million in its opening weekend and eventually over US$288 million worldwide.
Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class completed the trio. Byrne played Moira MacTaggert, a CIA agent in the 1960s. She described her as feisty and ambitious, with a toughness she liked. Byrne said she knew neither the comics nor the film series, apart from knowing 'what a juggernaut of a film it was'. She was cast late, after production had already begun. The film grossed US$353.6 million worldwide.
The Insidious franchise returned in 2013 with Insidious: Chapter 2, reuniting her with Wan, Patrick Wilson and Lin Shaye. It received mixed reviews but had the biggest opening day in North America for the month of September. It eventually made over US$160 million against a budget of US$5 million.
In 2013 Byrne also played the newlywed wife opposite Rafe Spall in the comedy I Give It a Year. Variety praised their chemistry and called her an ace comedienne perfectly suited to screwball. The next year came Neighbors, with Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Byrne played one half of a couple who come into conflict with the fraternity that has moved in next door. The Atlantic wrote that she walked away with the film by making her character a well-rounded, conflicted person. It took in US$270.1 million worldwide.
In Spy in 2015, Byrne reunited with Melissa McCarthy and played Rayna, the daughter of an arms dealer, opposite Jude Law and Jason Statham. Decider singled out the private-plane banter between Byrne and McCarthy as the highlight. It also noted that her emergence as a comic star was remarkable given her lack of a comedy background. She returned for Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising in 2016 and appeared in Instant Family in 2018.
In Peter Rabbit in 2018, Byrne voiced Jemima Puddle-Duck and also played Bea, a local woman who paints pictures of the rabbits. The film made US$351.2 million worldwide, and she returned for the 2021 sequel. Her voice work reached children's television too. In season 3 of Bluey, she voiced Brandy Cattle in the episodes 'Onesies' and 'The Sign'.
In 2020 Byrne portrayed Gloria Steinem in the miniseries Mrs. America. She then led the Apple TV comedy series Physical, which ran from 2021 to 2023. She also served as an executive producer on that series. In 2023 she began leading Platonic, another Apple TV comedy.
The stage drew her back in 2020 with the title role in a revival of the Greek tragedy Medea at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, opposite Bobby Cannavale. Adam Feldman of Time Out called her performance 'riveting'. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter noted that she had proven herself a fine dramatic actress but had recently been overshadowed by her comic roles. Earlier, in 2014-2015, she had starred on Broadway in the revival of the screwball comedy You Can't Take It With You.
Mary Bronstein directed If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, a psychological drama in which Byrne played a troubled mother. It premiered to positive reviews at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in 2025. Her performance won her the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance. It also earned numerous Best Actress awards, including those from the National Board of Review and the Golden Globes. Nominations followed from the Actor, BAFTA and Critics' Choice Awards.
In March 2026 Byrne appeared in a Broadway revival of Noël Coward's comedic farce Fallen Angels, opposite Kelli O'Hara. Jason Zinoman of The New York Times praised the pair's chemistry, writing, 'The dynamite performances of Byrne and O'Hara are the main event.' Her performance earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play.
Australian FHM placed Byrne 9th in its Sexiest Women in the World list in 2001 and 16th in 2006. She also appeared several times in the Annual Independent Critics List of the 100 Most Beautiful Famous Faces from Around the World. She ranked 3rd in 2005 and 1st in 2009. Who Magazine included her in its Most Beautiful People list of 2007, and People ranked her 7th among best dressed celebrities in 2015.
Max Factor used Byrne as its face from 2004 to 2009. In 2014 she became the face of Oroton, an Australian producer of luxury fashion accessories. Beyond fashion, she was the face of UNICEF Australia's 2007 Designers United campaign. She served on the jury of Tropfest in 2006 and of Tropfest@Tribeca in 2007. She is a graduate and ambassador of the Young Actors Studio at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
In 2013, living in New York, Byrne said she remained insecure about a stable career. 'I don't think that insecurity ever leaves you. You're a freelancer. There's always an element of uncertainty,' she said.
Her brother George's marriage makes her the sister-in-law of the New Zealand actress Rose McIver. Byrne was in a relationship with the Australian actor Brendan Cowell for over six years. He moved from Sydney to New York City after her success on Damages, and the relationship ended in January 2010. Since 2012 she has been in a relationship with the American actor Bobby Cannavale. They have two sons, born in February 2016 and November 2017. In 2026 Byrne referred to Cannavale as her husband.
