  London is where Robin Atkin Downes was born, before his training carried him across the Atlantic. He completed a Master of Fine Arts at Temple University, based in Philadelphia. That single academic credential is the only detail on record about his years before professional acting. There is no mention of family, teachers, or first roles. A British-born actor who trained inside an American graduate theater program would go on to work across both English-dub voice work and American network television.

• 3. Roles You Never See

  Travis Touchdown is the character Downes voices throughout the No More Heroes series, one of many protagonists he has lent his voice to. The Ratchet & Clank games cast him as Captain Slag, and multiple Saints Row titles let players select his voice for the male protagonist. Team Fortress 2 gives him the Medic, one of that game's core cast of characters.

  Luxord is his role across the Kingdom Hearts series, and Destiny 2: Forsaken casts him as Spider. He voices the Prophet of Regret in Halo 2 and Brynjolf in Skyrim. His credits also include Robert in The Last of Us and Captain Conrad Roth in Tomb Raider.

  The Uncharted franchise uses him for various characters across its games, adding still more titles to an already long list of credits. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within casts him as The Prince, and Apex Legends gives him Ballistic. Resistance: Retribution has him voicing James Grayson, and X-Men Legends casts him as both Cyclops and Pyro. Gears of War and the Metal Gear series each use him for additional characters beyond these named roles. That same range of casting also shows up on screen, starting with an animated lead voiced years before some of these games existed.

• 4. Beyond The Console

  Ack is the character Downes voices in How to Train Your Dragon. That animated film role carried him onto movie screens rather than only games or television. He also dubbed David in the English-language version of Steamboy and voiced Manchester Black in Superman vs. The Elite. Those animated roles sit alongside a smaller body of live-action television work, where Downes appeared on camera rather than only behind a microphone.

  Angel cast him as Pockla, and Babylon 5 gave him two roles, Byron and Morann. Buffy the Vampire Slayer used him for a single episode as Machida, one of several one-off television appearances across his career.

  The Strain gave him a longer run as The Master, a recurring television role rather than a single appearance. He also turns up across multiple episodes of Regular Show and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and ThunderCats add still more voice credits, each with various rather than single characters.

  In July 2021, Downes voiced Cham Syndulla in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. He had already played the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and in Star Wars Rebels. Three separate series, spread across different years within the same franchise, kept one voice attached to one character.
