  • Michaël Dudok de Wit was born on the 15th of July 1953 in Abcoude, Netherlands. He completed his high school education within the borders of his home country before seeking further training abroad. The young artist traveled to Switzerland to attend the Geneva School of Fine Arts. This move placed him outside the familiar Dutch landscape and into a new artistic environment. His studies continued across the channel at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. He graduated from that institution in 1978 with a film titled The Interview. That early work marked the beginning of a career that would span decades. A son named Alex Dudok de Wit later became a journalist and writer.

  • After working for one year in Barcelona, he settled in London where he directs and animates award-winning commercials for television and cinema. Clients included Heinz Salad Cream and Volkswagen during this period. In 1992, he created the short film Tom Sweep followed by The Monk and the Fish in 1994. The latter film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film at the 67th Academy Awards. It also won a César Award for Best Short Film and the Cartoon d'or. Michael writes and illustrates children's picture books while teaching animation at art colleges in England and abroad. His commercial work ranged from ads for United Airlines to campaigns for Owen's Corning Roof Insulation.

  • His film Father and Daughter released in 2000 won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. The same movie took home a BAFTA Award and the Grand Prix at Annecy. It also secured the Grand Prix at Animafest Zagreb along with dozens of other major awards worldwide. This success built upon his earlier reputation established through The Monk and the Fish. The story itself remains silent yet deeply emotional without dialogue. Critics praised the visual storytelling as it unfolded over decades of time within the narrative. The Animation Show of Shows later included both The Monk and the Fish and Father and Daughter in their collections.

  • In 2016, he released the feature-length film The Red Turtle. This project marked his debut as a director of a full-length animated movie. The film received a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film at the 89th Academy Awards. Production involved collaboration between French studio Folimage and Dutch producers. The story follows a castaway on a deserted island who encounters a mysterious red turtle. Audiences responded strongly to the unique visual style combined with minimal dialogue. The film became a critical darling across international borders shortly after its release.

  • Since Tom Sweep all Dudok de Wit's films have his trademark brush stroke drawing and his use of ink and watercolour. He applies these materials directly to create texture and movement throughout each frame. The technique gives his work a distinct organic feel compared to digital animation methods. Even his short film The Aroma of Tea from 2006 was drawn entirely with tea instead of traditional ink. This approach creates subtle variations in tone that standard pigments cannot replicate. His illustrations appear in books like Oscar & Hoo published by HarperCollins in 2001.

  • De Wit became a recipient of the Winsor McCay Award in 2025. This honor recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of animation over many years. He has won multiple prizes including César Awards and BAFTA awards for his shorts. His commercial work includes campaigns for Mcallan Malt Whiskey and Nestlé Smarties. Contributions to major productions include storyboarding for Beauty and the Beast at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1992. He also worked on Fantasia 2000 and contributed to Heavy Metal featuring Gerald Potterton. His body of work spans from 1978 through the mid-2020s without interruption.
