  • The film premiered in Japanese theaters on the 7th of July 1984. It was a reinterpretation of episodes two through twenty-seven of the Super Dimension Fortress Macross animated television series. New animation replaced the original footage for this feature-length version. The storyline did not fit directly into the Macross chronology at first. It existed as an alternate universe retelling of the story initially. Later productions established it as part of the main Macross universe. Within that fictional world, it is a popular movie shown in Macross 7. Shoji Kawamori and Haruhiko Mikimoto worked on character designs alongside Kazutaka Miyatake. They redesigned many ships and mecha for the film. These new designs appeared in later entries like Macross 7 and Macross Frontier. The SDF-1 fortress itself looked different than in the TV show. It featured two ARMD carriers instead of Daedalus and Prometheus docked as arms. This became the standard design for future installments.

  • The space fortress SDF-1 Macross tries to evade the Zentradi at the edge of the Solar System. Pilot Hikaru Ichijyo rescues pop idol Lynn Minmay during an assault. Both characters become trapped in a section of the fortress for days. Their relationship develops while they are stuck together. The Zentradi discover human music has a disruptive effect on them. Supreme leader Gorg Boddole Zer suspects culture relates to an ancient music box he keeps. Hikaru and Minmay joyride across Saturn's rings before being captured by the aliens. Lieutenant Misa Hayase and Lynn Kaifun also get taken aboard a Zentradi ship. A squadron of Meltrandi invades the ship allowing escape. Hikaru and Misa arrive on Earth which was wiped out by prior attacks. They find an ancient city of the Protoculture revealing alien origins. Misa discovers an artifact containing lyrics to an ancient love song. Captain Bruno J. Global announces a truce between Macross and Zentradi. Minmay realizes Hikaru is now with Misa when they reunite. The translated song unites Zentradi and Meltrandi against Boddole Zer. The film ends with a concert by Minmay in front of the rebuilt Macross.

  • Shoji Kawamori, Kazutaka Miyatake and Haruhiko Mikimoto handled mecha designs. Narumi Kakinouchi served as assistant animation director. The film had a budget equivalent to roughly 100 million yen at the time. It became the second most expensive anime film up until then. Only Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro cost more in 1979. Some scenes initially storyboarded had to be cut for the 1984 release. An ending sequence featuring Minmay in concert was among those removed. This concert scene later appeared in the 1987 OVA Flash Back 2012. Animators drew two missiles to look like Budweiser cans during action sequences. Tako Hai drinks also appear as hidden details in missile graphics. The updated Complete Edition includes the animated concert sequence in its credits. An additional scene showing Max and Milia's marriage remained unanimated originally. That wedding scene later appeared as a flashback in Macross 7. The production faced significant challenges creating high-budget animation for theatrical distribution.

  • Kentaro Haneda composed the film's soundtrack with new orchestral tracks. He included some music from the original TV series. Kazuhiko Katō wrote the theme song Do You Remember Love. Mari Iijima performed that signature track for the movie. The Complete Edition features an ending theme called An Angel's Paints. Iijima composed and performed this final piece as well. The film received huge marketing campaigns generating long lines of fans. Many people camped outside cinemas the night before the premiere. Otaku no Video dramatized these events in 1991. The Anime Grand Prix ranked the film second behind Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984. Their theme song took first place in that same poll. The movie earned gross rentals totaling approximately 2 billion yen in Japan. This translated to around 3 billion yen in total box office revenue. The song remains popular decades after its release. It serves as the emotional core resolving the conflict between alien races.
