Macross: Do You Remember Love? premiered in Japanese theaters on the 7th of July 1984. The release generated enormous audience anticipation, with fans camping outside cinemas the night before opening day.
The theme song "Do You Remember Love" was composed by Kazuhiko Kato and performed by Mari Iijima, who also voiced the character Lynn Minmay in the film. The song ranked first in the 1984 Anime Grand Prix.
The film was originally conceived as an alternate universe retelling of the TV series, but later Macross productions established it as part of the main Macross universe. Within the fictional world, it exists as a popular in-universe film that characters in Macross 7 actually watch.
Ongoing legal disputes between Big West, Studio Nue, Tatsunoko, and Harmony Gold USA prevented a proper US release. Carl Macek wanted to dub the film for Robotech but Harmony Gold could not license it. As of 2023, it remains excluded from the 2021 international licensing agreement that covers other Macross sequels.
The Complete Edition incorporates a concert sequence featuring Minmay that was cut from the original 1984 theatrical release due to production issues. That footage was animated in 1987 for the OVA Flash Back 2012 and later added to the film's end credits. The 2025 release is a Japanese 4K remaster on Ultra HD and standard Blu-ray.
Shoji Kawamori, Kazutaka Miyatake, and Haruhiko Mikimoto redesigned many ships, mecha, and characters for the film. The SDF-1 Macross was given two ARMD carriers instead of the Daedalus and Prometheus arms from the TV series, and this revised design was adopted by later Macross installments including Macross Plus and Macross Frontier.
