The film premiered in Japanese theaters on the 7th of July 1984. It was a reinterpretation of episodes two through twenty-seven of the Super Dimension Fortress Macross animated television series.
Shoji Kawamori, Kazutaka Miyatake, and Haruhiko Mikimoto handled character designs and mecha redesigns for the film. These new designs appeared in later entries like Macross 7 and Macross Frontier.
The film had a budget equivalent to roughly 100 million yen at the time and became the second most expensive anime film up until then. The movie earned gross rentals totaling approximately 2 billion yen in Japan which translated to around 3 billion yen in total box office revenue.
Kentaro Haneda composed the film's soundtrack with new orchestral tracks while Kazuhiko Katō wrote the theme song Do You Remember Love. Mari Iijima performed that signature track for the movie and also composed and performed the final piece An Angel's Paints.
Harmony Gold USA could not license it due to unknown political reasons and legal battles suppressed further releases of subtitled versions. Big West, Studio Nue and Harmony Gold reached an agreement in 2021 yet official Robotech accounts still prohibit the film as of 2023.
