  • John Adedayo Bamidele Adegboyega arrived in the Camberwell district of London on the 17th of March 1992. He grew up in Peckham with parents Abigail and Samson Adegboyega. His mother worked as a carer while his father served as a Pentecostal minister. Both parents traced their heritage to Yoruba descent. John had two older sisters who lived with him during childhood. His first acting experience involved playing a leopard in a school play at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School. At age nine, he appeared in another school production where Teresa Early noticed him. Early was the artistic director of Theatre Peckham, a learning theatre for young people living in south London. Boyega spent time there outside school hours from ages nine to fourteen. He later attended Westminster City School starting in 2003. From 2008 to 2010, he studied for a National Diploma in Performing Arts at South Thames College. He enrolled at the University of Greenwich but dropped out to focus on acting. He trained with the Identity School of Acting in Hackney.

  • Boyega appeared in Six Parties at the National Theatre before landing a role in Attack the Block. Screen International chose him as one of the UK Stars of Tomorrow in September 2011. He played Moses, a teenage gang leader in the comedy horror film released that same year. Critics and audiences acclaimed both the movie and his performance. In March 2012, he was cast in Half of a Yellow Sun based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's book. HBO announced in September 2011 that he had been cast in Da Brick, a boxing drama pilot written by John Ridley. That pilot never got picked up by the network. He also starred as Jamal in Junkhearts during 2011. His work earned him multiple awards including the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Empire Magazine named him Best Male Newcomer for the same role. The London Film Critics Circle honored him as Young British Performer of Year. These accolades established him as a leading talent within British cinema circles.

  • On the 29th of April 2014, it was confirmed Boyega would play Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film released on the 18th of December 2015 to critical acclaim. He portrayed a stormtrooper who leaves the First Order after witnessing their cruelty. Boyega received the BAFTA Rising Star Award in January 2016. He won the Trophée Chopard at the Cannes Film Festival later that year. He reprised his role as Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. During filming of the final installment, he accidentally left his script in a hotel room. A Lucasfilm employee bought the script from eBay to prevent leaks. In an interview with Good Morning America, he discussed this incident openly. His performance earned him Saturn Award nominations for Best Actor across multiple films. MTV Movie Awards recognized him with Best Breakthrough Performance honors. Kids Choice Awards voted him Favorite Movie Actor during this period. This trilogy made him one of the most recognizable actors globally.

  • Boyega formed UpperRoom Entertainment Limited in January 2016. His production company co-produced Pacific Rim Uprising alongside Legendary Entertainment in 2018. He played Jake Pentecost while also serving as producer on that project. In November 2018, they announced a novel adaptation called Hold Back the Stars starring Boyega and Letitia Wright. UpperRoom made a first-look deal with VIS Kids recently. While filming Rebel Ridge, he walked out mid-production due to family issues. He produced Breaking which premiered under its original title 892 at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Boyega teased a collaboration with Sebastian Thiel developing a series based on their childhood experiences. He became patron of the Identity School of Acting Los Angeles branch when it opened in 2018. These ventures shifted his focus toward producing new projects beyond acting alone.

  • In 2020, Boyega won a Golden Globe Award for portraying Leroy Logan in Red White and Blue. The episode was part of Steve McQueen's anthology series Small Axe. Critics Choice Television Awards named him Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie. London Film Critics Circle honored him as British Irish Actor of Year for this role. Satellite Awards recognized him as Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Film. BAFTA Television Awards awarded him Best Actor for the same performance. This portrayal marked a significant turning point in his career trajectory. He played King Ghezo in The Woman King released in 2022 alongside Viola Davis. His work in They Cloned Tyrone followed as a drug dealer character in 2023. These roles demonstrated his range across historical epics and science fiction comedies alike.

  • Boyega expressed solidarity with George Floyd during a Black Lives Matter rally speech at Hyde Park. Lucasfilm reiterated their support for both Boyega and the movement following his gesture. In a 2020 interview with British GQ, he criticized Disney for sidelining Finn in the sequel trilogy. He stated that marketing black characters as important then pushing them aside was not good. He listed among Top 100 most influential people in the UK of African descent in Powerlist editions from 2020 to 2021. New African magazine cited him as one of the Top 100 most influential Africans in 2020. He responded to fan suggestions about playing Static by saying he would be too old for the role. Instead, he expressed interest in seeing newcomers receive such opportunities while potentially playing Red Hood himself. His public statements consistently addressed racial justice issues within major franchises.
