John Boyega was born on the 17th of March 1992 in the Camberwell district of London and grew up in Peckham. His parents are of Yoruba descent; his father Samson is a Pentecostal minister and his mother Abigail works as a carer.
John Boyega played Finn, a stormtrooper for the First Order who witnesses the organisation's cruelty and defects to join the fight against them. The film was released on the 18th of December 2015 and both the film and his performance were acclaimed by critics and audiences.
Boyega won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in Television for his portrayal of Leroy Logan in the Small Axe episode Red, White and Blue, directed by Steve McQueen. He also received a BAFTA Television Award nomination for Best Actor for the same role.
In a 2020 interview with British GQ, Boyega criticised Disney for sidelining his character Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He said directly: "Do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side."
At nine years old, Boyega was spotted by Teresa Early, the artistic director of Theatre Peckham, while performing in a school play at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School. He trained at Theatre Peckham from age nine to fourteen, later studying at South Thames College and training formally at the Identity School of Acting in Hackney.
Boyega founded UpperRoom Entertainment Limited in January 2016. The company co-produced Pacific Rim: Uprising in 2018 with Legendary Entertainment, and later made a first-look deal with VIS Kids.
