• 1. Introduction

  Jesús Ferreira came off the bench in the 71st minute for FC Dallas on the 3rd of June 2017, against Real Salt Lake. Eighteen minutes later, in the 89th minute of that 6-2 win, he scored his first professional goal. He had left Colombia years earlier to join his father's new club in Texas. That single appearance opened a career that would carry him through a loan spell and a blocked overseas transfer. The same career carried him through a cross country trade and a run of history making performances for the United States. Somewhere along the way came a farm outside Dallas, a nickname earned in the Caribbean, and the birth of his first child.

• 2. Colombia To Dallas

  David Ferreira signed with FC Dallas when his son was ten years old, pulling the family from Colombia to Texas. Jesús joined the club's youth academy and progressed through its ranks over the following years. On the 17th of November 2016, he signed a homegrown contract with FC Dallas, a deal reserved for players developed inside a club's own academy. That contract meant the club had watched him grow up on its own training fields before ever handing him senior minutes. A loan spell was still two years away, but the path there had already been set.

• 3. Loan And Breakthrough

  FC Dallas loaned Ferreira to Tulsa Roughnecks FC in May 2018, sending him to the United Soccer League for a season. He scored his first goal for Tulsa on the 18th of August 2018, against Real Monarchs. His first career hat-trick followed on the 5th of September 2018, against Seattle Sounders FC 2. Across that loan he scored six goals in fourteen matches. The following season, back at FC Dallas, Ferreira broke into the starting lineup under coach Luchi Gonzalez. On the 10th of December 2019, he signed a four-year contract with the club. His first MLS brace came on the 29th of August 2021, when he scored twice in a 5-3 win over Austin FC. On the 18th of January 2022, Ferreira signed a designated player contract with FC Dallas, a deal that kept him at the club through 2025. He was named MLS player of the week in week four of the 2022 season. That came after a hat-trick and an assist in a 4-1 win over the Portland Timbers. He finished that season with 18 goals in 35 matches, his best return for the club. In week two of the 2023 season, Ferreira scored a brace in a 3-1 win over LA Galaxy. It earned him a place on the league's Team of the Matchday. He was also named the 2022 MLS Young Player of the Year and picked for that season's MLS Best XI. He was also an MLS All-Star in both 2022 and 2023. Over eight seasons with FC Dallas in total, he scored 55 goals in 181 appearances. Those numbers and honors were enough to draw interest from well beyond Major League Soccer.

• 4. The Blocked Transfer

  Russian club FC Spartak Moscow offered FC Dallas $13 million to sign Ferreira in January 2024, according to media reports. Major League Soccer, which owns all player contracts in the league, allegedly halted the transaction. The reported reason was the suspension of sports business relationships that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ferreira stayed at FC Dallas, where his contract already ran through the 2025 season. He made fewer appearances in 2024 than in prior years because of injuries. The deal that never happened would not be the last change of address in his career.

• 5. Trade To Seattle

  Seattle Sounders FC signed Ferreira to a three-year contract on the 8th of January 2025. The move came through a trade with FC Dallas that sent winger Léo Chú the other way. Dallas also received up to $2.3 million in general allocation money, paid out over two years. The two clubs agreed to split the rights to any future international transfer fee for Ferreira. He contributed five assists across his first fifteen matches for Seattle but went without a goal in that stretch. His first goal for the club came on the 28th of May, in a 1-0 win over San Diego FC. Seattle went on to win the 2025 Leagues Cup during his time with the club.

• 6. Pirate Of The Caribbean

  Ferreira became a United States citizen in December 2019, which opened the door to representing the country's senior team. He had already attended United States Soccer Federation youth camps, and in 2016 he was called up to the United States under-17 squad. In 2019, Ferreira was called up to the under-23 team for qualifying games ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics. Those qualifiers were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was called up again, this time to the rescheduled 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship squad, but the team failed to reach the Olympics. His first senior camp with the United States came in January 2020. On the 1st of February 2020, he made his senior international debut in a friendly against Costa Rica. On the 31st of January 2021, Ferreira scored his first two international goals for the United States. It came after his second January camp with the senior team, and he was named Man of the Match. On the 10th of June 2022, he scored four goals against Grenada in a 5-0 win. It was his first international hat-trick, coming during the 2022-23 CONCACAF Nations League A campaign. That history of high-scoring games against teams in the Caribbean earned him the nickname Pirate of the Caribbean. Ferreira made the United States roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He appeared once, in a 3-1 round of 16 loss to the Netherlands on the 3rd of December 2022. At the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Ferreira scored three goals in a 6-0 win over St. Kitts and Nevis on the 28th of June. The result eliminated the Sugar Boys from the tournament. In the very next match, a 6-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, he scored a third career hat-trick. That made him the first United States men's player to score hat-tricks in consecutive matches. He scored the equalizer against Panama in the Gold Cup semifinal, in the 105th minute on the 12th of July 2023. Ferreira then missed the first kick as the United States lost the penalty shootout 2-3. He still won the tournament's Golden Boot for scoring seven goals, the most of any player in the competition. He was also named to the Gold Cup Best XI that year.

• 7. Family And The Farm

  David Ferreira, Jesús's father, played professionally for clubs including América de Cali, Atlético Paranaense, and FC Dallas, as well as for the Colombia national team. Away from stadiums, Ferreira owns a 10 acre farm near Dallas, where he raises chickens and three cows. His girlfriend gave birth to the couple's first child, a daughter, in May 2025, a few months after he changed coasts from Dallas to Seattle.
