  • Intuit Dome opened in Inglewood, California on the 15th of August 2024, and within two months a visiting NBA star stood on its court and admitted he could not stop staring. Kevin Durant, playing for the Phoenix Suns in the Clippers' first regular season home game, said the crowd noise "sounds a little different. It's going to be a tough road environment for anyone who comes in here." His teammate Devin Booker was more direct: "You spend $2 billion, put a wall up." Behind that offhand remark is a story spanning decades, from a franchise that spent its entire history renting space in other people's buildings to one that now owns the newest arena in the NBA. What did it take to build it? Who tried to stop it, and why? And what does a basketball-specific arena actually do differently from every other building in the league?

  • Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium was the franchise's first home, when the team was still called the Braves. Even there, the organization ranked below the Sabres hockey club and Canisius College's basketball program when it came to scheduling priority. The team moved to San Diego, renamed itself the Clippers, and played at San Diego's Sports Arena without any ownership stake. Los Angeles brought the Memorial Sports Arena, and then in 1999 a move to Staples Center, later renamed Crypto.com Arena, which the Clippers shared with the Lakers and the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.

The arrangement at Crypto.com Arena had a specific, revealing requirement. Before each Clippers game, the venue ran a formal neutralization process: Lakers banners, sponsorships, and championship displays were physically covered, the court was swapped in, and the lighting was reset. After the game, everything was restored to Lakers settings. On weekends that included Kings games and music concerts, this full transformation had to be completed within a three to four hour window, including cleaning the seating bowl from the previous event. Throughout all of it, the Clippers never held any tangible ownership interest in any arena they called home. Owner Steve Ballmer identified a dedicated building as the franchise's highest priority.

  • Steve Ballmer announced in March 2020 that he would buy The Forum from MSG for $400 million in an all-cash deal. The sale closed in May, with all existing Forum employees retained under the new ownership. Acquiring the building that had served as the legal opposition's home base removed the last major obstacle to construction.

Groundbreaking took place on the 17th of September 2021. Ballmer described his vision as building a "basketball palazzo." The naming rights deal announced alongside construction was substantial: a 23-year agreement with Intuit, the Mountain View, California based financial software company, worth at least $500 million. The arena was designed by AECOM and built to hold 18,000 seats. On the 5th of April 2024, the building announced that Bruno Mars would perform the inaugural shows on August 15 and 16.

  • On the 19th of July 2024, Ballmer hosted an unveiling event to demonstrate the arena's halo board, a double-sided video display designed by Daktronics wrapping the interior ceiling at 4K resolution. Features he walked through included "player 360," which displays detailed player profiles, and "coaches corner," which shows advanced in-game statistics. The halo boards are also fitted with T-shirt cannons capable of reaching the upper decks.

The arena has over 1,100 toilets and urinals, three times the NBA league average, designed expressly to keep fans out of long lines and in their seats. The seating section called The Wall runs 51 consecutive rows along the baseline beside the visiting team's bench, with no suites interrupting the sightlines, reserved entirely for Clippers fans. The model was the Yellow Wall at Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion in Germany.

Five public artworks are installed throughout the building. Refik Anadol's "Living Arena" draws on live LAX flight data, Inglewood weather, Clippers player tracking from previous games, and the national parks of California. Kyungmi Shin's stained glass mosaic "Spring to Life" depicts basketball players against the Centinela Springs, the former water source of the Tongva people indigenous to the Los Angeles area. Patrick Martinez's neon sculpture "Same Boat" quotes Whitney Young: "We may have all come on different ships but we're in the same boat now." The building also displays high school basketball jerseys from across California in its rafters, and an outdoor plaza with public courts opens onto the surrounding neighborhood.

  • The first preseason game at Intuit Dome was played on the 14th of October 2024, a 110-96 Clippers win over the Dallas Mavericks. The first regular season game on the 23rd of October drew 18,300 fans and ended in a 116-113 overtime loss to Phoenix. The first regular season win came on the 4th of November 2024, when the Clippers defeated the San Antonio Spurs 113-104. The arena's first NBA playoff game arrived on the 24th of April 2025, a 117-83 win over the Denver Nuggets before 17,927 fans.

The concert calendar from August through November 2024 ran from Bruno Mars and Olivia Rodrigo to Slipknot, Cyndi Lauper on her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, and Tyler, the Creator's listening party for his eighth studio album Chromakopia on the 27th of October. On the 30th of January 2025, Intuit Dome co-hosted FireAid, a benefit concert for relief efforts following the Southern California wildfires. Rauw Alejandro became the first Latin artist to perform three consecutive sold-out nights at the venue, on the 25th, 27th, and the 28th of April 2025; a Saturday show was rescheduled to Monday after the Clippers reached the playoffs.

The 2026 NBA All-Star Game is set for the 15th of February 2026. The arena will serve as a basketball venue for the 2028 Summer Olympics, meaning Inglewood will host one of the world's largest sporting events within four years of the building's opening night.
