GEMBA (studio)
GEMBA is a Japanese animation studio with an unusual origin story: it spent its first decade working in the background before anyone outside the industry knew its name. Founded in 2006 as a subsidiary of Digital Frontier, GEMBA was built from the ground up around 3DCG production. For ten years it operated quietly as a sub-contracting studio, gaining experience behind the scenes. Then in 2016 came the moment that would put the studio in front of audiences for the first time. What happened next raised pointed questions about what Japanese animation can and cannot do with computer-generated imagery, and what it takes for a studio to find its footing.
Digital Frontier established GEMBA in 2006 specifically to handle 3DCG work as a contracted subsidiary. That relationship meant GEMBA spent its formative years producing animation for other companies rather than taking the lead on projects of its own. The arrangement gave the studio a decade to build technical expertise in computer-generated imagery. Production co-operation with Liden Films and its parent company Digital Frontier would continue to appear in GEMBA's credits even after the studio began working as a primary contractor, suggesting those institutional ties ran deep.
On the 1st of July 2016, GEMBA's first production as a primary contractor began airing: an adaptation of Kentaro Miura's manga Berserk. The series ran for 24 episodes, finishing on the 23rd of June 2017. It was co-animated alongside 2D studio Millepensee and served as a sequel to Berserk: The Golden Age Arc. The choice to adapt one of manga's most celebrated dark fantasy series as GEMBA's public debut carried obvious risk. Critics and viewers responded harshly, directing their criticism squarely at the CG animation. For a studio that had spent ten years developing its 3DCG capabilities, the reception was a blunt measure of where audiences stood on computer-generated anime in 2016.
Tsutomu Mizushima directed The Magnificent Kotobuki, which began airing on the 13th of January 2019 and ran through the 31st of March 2019, comprising 12 episodes. Unlike the Berserk adaptation, Kotobuki was an original work rather than a manga adaptation. Digital Frontier again provided production co-operation. Where Berserk drew harsh responses, reception to Kotobuki was notably more positive, marking a meaningful shift in how audiences engaged with GEMBA's work. Mizushima returned to the material for a compilation film, The Magnificent Kotobuki Complete Edition, which was released on the 11th of September 2020 with a runtime of 119 minutes.
