Frieren
Frieren is an elven mage who makes a promise to her friends that, for her, is almost no promise at all. Under a meteor shower called the Era Meteors, which appears once every fifty years, she agrees to gather with her old companions again for the next one. Fifty years is a short wait when you are an elf. It is a very long one when your friends are human. That quiet mismatch is the engine of Frieren, a Japanese fantasy manga that has run in Weekly Shōnen Sunday since 2020. It also became a hit anime. How does a story that begins after the great battle is already won hold so many readers? What did its creators have to overcome to make it? And why did critics keep describing it as serene, sad and strangely comforting?
Four adventurers set out on a quest that lasted ten years and ended with the Demon King defeated. Himmel was the human hero, Eisen a dwarven warrior, Heiter a human priest, and Frieren the elven mage. When their work was done, the world was at peace and the party split up. Frieren left to roam the world in search of magical knowledge. She came back to the capital fifty years later and found a changed humanity and companions who had visibly aged. Together they watched the meteors one last time. Soon afterward Himmel died of old age. At his funeral, Frieren admitted her guilt for never trying to learn more about the man. That regret sends her on the road again.
Heiter had adopted an orphaned child named Fern, and he asked Frieren to teach her and look after her. Frieren accepted. She also received an invitation to travel north to the resting place of souls, where she could see Himmel again, say what she never said and bid him farewell. Fern became her travelling companion, and Frieren kept studying magic along the way. Later a young warrior named Stark joined them, a boy whom Eisen had trained. The deeper subject is how Frieren experiences time. An elf's lifespan is so long that years or even decades pass like moments, so she saw that decade with Himmel's party as fleeting. Yet flashbacks keep returning to the people she met then, showing how deeply they shaped the way she sees life.
Editor-in-chief Katsuma Ogura had read the earlier manga of the writer, Yamada, titled Bocchi Hakase to Robot Shōjo no Zetsubō Teki Utopia. It sold poorly, but Ogura thought it was a masterpiece. That belief led to a proposal that Yamada should work with an illustrator on his next series. The team tossed around several ideas, including a gag manga, and Yamada produced storyboards for a one-shot about Frieren. Ogura started laughing while reading them, then declared that this was not a comedy at all. After Yamada finished the first storyboard, Ogura contacted Tsukasa Abe and asked him to draw a character chart. Abe's artwork pleased Ogura, who suggested the two should collaborate. Yamada approved of Abe's first drawing of Frieren and felt she had an aura of humanity. The title came from an office contest. An editor announced: "If we decide on a good title, we will pay a prize of 10,000 yen out of our own pocket". The deputy editor-in-chief offered Sōsō no Frieren, and the creators chose it.
The weekly magazine began serializing the story on the 28th of April 2020. Its schedule has not run smoothly since. In January 2023 a hiatus was announced, and the manga returned that March. Another break began in May 2024 and ended in August. A third came in December of that same year. The series resumed on the 23rd of July 2025, but in October of that year the magazine announced an indefinite hiatus. The notice explained that Yamada and Abe needed to focus on their health. It added that the decision followed talks between the creators and the magazine's editorial staff about changing the serialization pace.
The first collected volume reached shops on the 18th of August 2020, and by the 18th of December 2025 there were 15. Viz Media announced its English license in February 2021 and published the first English volume on the 9th of November 2021. On the 9th of May 2023, its Viz Manga service began releasing chapters at the same time as Japan. In Southeast Asia, Shogakukan Asia licensed the work as Frieren: Remnants of the Departed. The anime came from Madhouse under director Keiichirō Saitō. It opened on the 29th of September 2023 with a two-hour special on Nippon TV, then moved to a block called Friday Anime Night. Its 28 episodes finished on the 22nd of March 2024. Tomoya Kitagawa directed a second season that aired from the 16th of January to the 27th of March 2026. A third season, adapting the Golden Land arc, is set for October 2027. Short comedic episodes also appeared online. Eleven ran from October 2023 to March 2024, six more from April to September 2025, and five from January to March 2026. Five authors each wrote a one-shot spin-off in the last week of May 2023: Kassan, Ren Miura, Jona, Kazumi Yamaguchi and Sōichi Igarashi. These were gathered into one volume on the 18th of December 2023. An official fanbook arrived on the 12th of January 2024. A prequel novel by Mei Hachimoku, supervised by Yamada, followed on the 17th of April 2024. It holds five short stories about Frieren, Fern, Stark, Kanne, Lawine and Aura. Yen Press licensed the novel in August 2025 and released it on the 24th of March 2026. A 24-page novella by Hachimoku came with the special edition of volume fourteen on the 18th of March 2025. An escape room called "Escape from the Millennium Dream" was announced in April 2024.
By March 2021, more than two million copies of the manga were in circulation. By January 2026 the figure had passed 35 million. Shogakukan printed 600,000 copies of the twelfth volume, which was the publisher's second-highest first printing for the year from April 2023 to March 2024. The fourteenth volume went to 700,000 and topped the publisher's list for April 2024 to March 2025. The fifteenth sold 521,551 copies and was the third best-selling volume of the first half of 2026. Awards came early. In 2021 the manga won the 14th Manga Taishō and the New Creator Prize of the 25th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. In 2024 it won the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award and the 48th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category. On the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list for male readers it placed second in 2021, sixth in 2022 and twelfth in 2025. In 2021 bookstore employees, through the site Honya Club, also ranked it second. Abroad, the American Library Association's Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table put it among the top ten of its 2022 Best Graphic Novels for Adults. It has appeared on Circana BookScan's monthly top 20 adult graphic novels list since February 2025.
Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network gave the first volume an A-. She liked the idea of Frieren outliving her companions and calling it an "interesting take on the fantasy genre", though she felt the art was not "quite up to the emotional tasks of the story". Her colleague Richard Eisenbeis praised the later volumes for pairing a grand battle with character growth and world-building, plus short tales aimed at the heart. Ross Locksley of UK Anime Network saw a likeness to the manga To Your Eternity. Wolfen Moondaughter of Sequential Tart gave the first volume 9 out of 10 and described it as serene and contemplative, a story of honouring lost loved ones and coping with grief. Her colleague Sheena McNeil scored it a 7 and compared its pace and feel to Haibane Renmei. Antonio Mireles of The Fandom Post ranked it the sixth-best manga of 2021. Kara Dennison of Otaku USA likened it to Lord of the Rings. Gracie Qiu of Anime Trending scored the anime 94.5 out of 100 and wrote of looking at her own life, "appreciating the journey I have traveled and wondering in anticipation at what is still yet to come." The next big question is the one set for October 2027, when the Golden Land arc is due on screen.
