Fallout (American TV series)

  • The television series Fallout opens with a young woman named Lucy leaving Vault 33 to search for her kidnapped father. Amazon Prime Video released it as a drama based on the role-playing video game franchise created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet created the series. For years, the studio that owned those games kept turning away offers to put them on screen. What finally changed its mind? How does a story set after a nuclear holocaust turn into something darkly funny? And what happened once viewers could watch it?

  • Since the release of Fallout 3 in 2008, Bethesda had fielded several pitches for a television version of its games, according to Todd Howard. None of them matched his vision of what the series should be.

Pete Hines, a Bethesda marketing executive, issued a warning to the company in 2015. He said, "There's way more things that can go wrong than can go right with this." His fear was that an adaptation's director might override the vision behind the games. Hines held up the 2005 Doom film as a cautionary example.

Jonathan Nolan changed the picture by arriving with an idea of his own. He was an avid player of the games. Howard, who directed various entries in the series, had seen what Nolan built with Westworld. He found that Nolan had a clear vision. Bethesda gave him freedom on one condition. The story had to stay true to the Fallout universe while standing as its own narrative, rather than retelling an existing game.

Amazon purchased the rights to a live-action project in 2020, and the series was announced that July. Nolan and Lisa Joy, through their company Kilter Films, developed it alongside Bethesda Game Studios. Joy called it "a gonzo, crazy, funny, adventure" unlike anything seen before. Howard signed on as an executive producer beside Nolan and Joy. In January 2022, Robertson-Dworet and Wagner were hired as showrunners.

  • In 2077, the United States and China exchanged nuclear strikes in what the series calls the Great War. The show takes place on an alternate Earth. There, advances in nuclear technology after World War II produced a retrofuturistic society and then a resource war.

Many survivors took shelter in bunkers known as Vaults. Most never learned the truth about them. Each Vault was designed to run sociological and psychological experiments on its residents, on behalf of Vault-Tec and numerous other American corporations.

The story begins 219 years after the war, in 2296. That is the furthest point in the future the Fallout franchise has ever visited. Lucy crosses the ruins of a devastated Los Angeles and meets two figures with their own agendas. One is Maximus, a squire in the Brotherhood of Steel. The other is a legendary ghoul bounty hunter who was once a famous actor named Cooper Howard. The series counts as canon within the Fallout continuity, and it borrows storylines and factions from the games.

The second season sends Lucy and Cooper to New Vegas. They hope to learn the truth about Vault-Tec, about Cooper's wife and daughter, and about Lucy's father. Maximus, now promoted within the Brotherhood, grows disillusioned with its internal corruption. His conscience pulls against the order's code. Cooper's wife, Barb Howard, is a high-ranking Vault-Tec executive, which ties his Hollywood past directly to the Vaults.

  • In February 2022, Walton Goggins was cast as Cooper Howard. Cooper is a Hollywood actor and Vault-Tec ambassador who mutated into a ghoul after the bombs fell, and who now works as a gunslinger and bounty hunter. Ella Purnell followed in March 2022 as Lucy MacLean, a peppy Vault dweller.

In June 2022, Kyle MacLachlan joined as Hank MacLean, Lucy's father and the Overseer of Vault 33. Aaron Moten and Xelia Mendes-Jones joined the same month as Maximus and Dane, a scribe of the Brotherhood. Moises Arias plays Norm, Lucy's younger brother.

October 2023 brought a wave of additions. Sarita Choudhury became Lee Moldaver, a nuclear scientist who survived the Great War. Michael Emerson played Dr. Siggi Wilzig, a defector from the Enclave. Leslie Uggams took the role of Betty Pearson, a Vault 33 councillor, and Zach Cherry played fellow councillor Woody Thomas. Guest roles reached further. Fred Armisen hosts an old-timey radio station as DJ Carl, and Chris Parnell plays the Cyclops overseer of Vault 4.

The second season drew bigger names. In November 2024, Macaulay Culkin joined in an undisclosed role, later revealed as a high-ranking member of Caesar's Legion. In August 2025, Justin Theroux was confirmed as Robert Edwin House, the CEO of RobCo Industries and ruler of the New Vegas Strip in 2281. House had already appeared in the video game Fallout: New Vegas.

In May 2026, Aaron Paul joined the third season's cast. Annabel O'Hagan and Dave Register were promoted to series regulars at the same time. O'Hagan plays Stephanie Harper, a pregnant Vault 33 resident who becomes overseer of Vault 32 in the second season.

  • Principal photography began on the 5th of July 2022, in New Jersey, New York and Utah. The crew shot on 35mm film. Nolan directed the first three episodes, with Stuart Dryburgh and Teodoro Maniaci as cinematographers.

Kolmanskop, a former mining operation that became a ghost town, supplied some of the wasteland scenes. So did Namibia's Skeleton Coast, where the western Namib Desert meets the South Atlantic. Treacherous seas have scattered shipwrecks along that shore, both historic and recent. Some scenes were filmed at the wreck of the Eduard Bohlen.

Wendover Airfield in Wendover, Utah, served as the first Brotherhood of Steel base. The location carries real atomic history. It is the airfield where the 509th Composite Group trained for its atomic missions in World War II.

Season two moved to Los Angeles and Toronto, chasing a $25 million tax incentive offered by California. Filming was scheduled for November 2024 and had begun by early December. The Los Angeles fires paused production in January 2025. Filming wrapped on the 7th of May 2025.

  • Ramin Djawadi composed the score, taking inspiration from the music Inon Zur wrote for the Fallout games. The series also borrows a habit of the games by featuring licensed songs, including music by The Ink Spots and The Mills Brothers. Amazon released the first-season soundtrack on the 8th of April 2024.

Jay Worth served as visual effects supervisor. He had already worked with Nolan and Joy on Person of Interest, Westworld, The Peripheral and Reminiscence. Grant Everett supervised effects on set and assembled a range of studios to handle environments, creatures and hard surface work.

Framestore in Montreal built the Yao Guai and Gulper creatures. RISE FX in Germany took on the Vertibird shots, the Power Armor and numerous environments. The Swedish studio Important Looking Pirates created the Cyclops overseer of Vault 4 and the organ harvester Snip-Snip. FutureWorks in India handled the ghoul noses. Refuge, CoSA, Mavericks, One of Us, Studio 8 and Deep Water FX also contributed. Together they worked across 3,300 visual effects shots in the first season.

  • Prime Video first scheduled the premiere for the 12th of April 2024. It later moved the date forward and released Fallout on the 10th of April 2024 at 6 PM Pacific Time. Just over a week later, on the 18th of April 2024, the platform renewed the series for a second season. The first season had a budget of $153 million.

The second season was set to arrive on the 17th of December 2025, then shifted a day earlier to the 16th. Remaining episodes followed weekly through the 4th of February 2026. In May 2025, a third season was ordered. MGM Home Entertainment released the first season on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on the 8th of July 2025. A steelbook edition sold only through Amazon's website and came with six collectible art cards.

To promote season two, the series released nine videos called Fallout Fake Talkshow between the 18th of December 2025 and the 4th of February 2026. Cast members played fictionalized versions of themselves, interviewed by Jon Daly in character as the Snake Oil Salesman. Six animated shorts also appeared as instructional videos for customers of the fictional RobCo Industries, each showcasing a different product.

The oddest extra came first. On the 10th of December 2025, six days before the new season, the show released "Fallout: The Ghoul Log," a Yule log-style holiday video.

  • Amazon reported that Fallout drew 65 million viewers in its first 16 days. That made it the second most-watched title in the platform's history, behind The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in 2022. By October 2024, the total had passed 100 million. Next TV, citing estimates from the research firm PlumResearch, reported the largest premiere audience of any Prime Video series to that point. The games felt the effect too. According to Steam Charts, the original Fallout game saw a 160% rise in its player base, the highest percentage increase among the games.

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives the series an average approval rating of 94%. Metacritic gives a weighted average of 73 out of 100. For the first season, Rotten Tomatoes reported 93% approval across 133 critic reviews. Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+. She wrote that it lives in a vivid and captivating universe familiar to gamers, though knowledge of the franchise is not required. Zaki Hasan of the San Francisco Chronicle gave it 3 out of 4.

Multiple critics called Fallout one of the best video game adaptations of all time. That praise carried weight because film and television versions of games have a poor reputation after several high-profile failures. Commentators compared it with The Last of Us. Tim Cain, creator of the franchise, praised the show in a YouTube video for matching the series' mood, its easter eggs and its characters. He also defended it against accusations that it contradicted canon.

Not everyone agreed. Kayvon Bumpus of Source Weekly described major discrepancies with Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. He noted that the show moved a primary location from those games by hundreds of miles without explanation. He wrote, "The Fallout show fundamentally breaks the universe that it attempts to expand."

The second season holds 96% approval on Rotten Tomatoes across 126 reviews, and a score of 73 on Metacritic from 22 reviews. Awards attention has been substantial. The series earned three Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Goggins. It also won two Creative Arts Emmy Awards out of 14 nominations.
