  • London publisher Joseph Malaby Dent conceived Everyman's Library in 1905 with a singular ambition. He wanted to build a library of one thousand volumes that would be affordable for students, the working classes, and the cultural elite alike. Dent looked to William Morris and his Kelmscott Press for design guidance. He commissioned the Monotype corporation to create a new typeface called Veronese. This font was a remake of an existing foundry face Dent had used previously. Series 59 emerged in 1912 using the same style as the Golden Type but featuring sharper slab serifs. These technical changes allowed Dent to produce texts efficiently on machines.

  • The original books appeared as pocket-sized hardcovers priced at just one shilling each. Early editions featured distinctive yellow dust jackets that became iconic over time. In 1935, Eric Ravilious replaced the old style designs with his own artwork. The series later transitioned into paperback formats during the 1960s under J.M. Dent. Modern paperbacks published since the 1990s show updated covers with striated front designs and orange spines. Black bands now mark these contemporary versions alongside plain hardback iterations from David Campbell Publishers. Original U.S. distribution rights were granted to New York City publishers E.P. Dutton.

  • Poet and editor Ernest Rhys suggested the name Everyman's Library after being named head editor. He discarded many ideas before recalling a quotation from the medieval play Everyman. The character Knowledge says: I will go with thee, and be thy guide, In thy most need to go by thy side. This exact quote appears on the title page of all volumes in both the library and its paperbacks. J.M. Dent and Company began publishing in 1906 with James Boswell's Life of Johnson. That first volume included a Milton quotation stating A good book is the precious life-blood of a master-spirit. By 1910, five hundred books had been released under the trademark.

  • By 1975, the series contained 994 titles spread across 1,239 physical volumes. Hardback rights transferred to newly formed David Campbell Publishers in 1991. Random House Group supported the relaunch in the United Kingdom while Alfred A. Knopf handled U.S. distribution. Control passed fully to US-based Random House in 2002. They continue publishing it under the Knopf Publishers imprint there and as Random House UK elsewhere. J.M. Dent & Sons was acquired by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 1988. That company became part of Orion Publishing Group in 1991 before joining Hachette Livre. Orion still publishes unrelated Everyman Paperbacks under the J.M. Dent imprint today.

  • A multi-volume encyclopedia joined the range in 1913 allowing individual purchases over time. The fifth edition published in 1967 consisted of twelve volumes containing 7763 pages total. Each page measured eight points in size yet held a large amount of information. Individual volumes weighed about one pound making them suitable for children's use. These encyclopedic entries differed significantly from standard library volumes in both weight and density. Budgeting allowed families to acquire sets gradually rather than all at once.

  • In 1956, the thousandth volume Aristotle's Metaphysics fulfilled Dent's original goal. Current Honorary Editorial Committee members include Henry Louis Gates Jr., Cynthia Ozick, and Simon Schama. Former committee members included Harold Bloom and Toni Morrison. The series influenced modern publishing standards through its affordable pricing model and durable design. Competing imprints like Penguin Classics emerged alongside it to serve similar audiences. Random House continues distributing hardback editions while J.M. Dent maintains paperback lines. Collectors track comprehensive listings from 1906 through 1982 and beyond into the modern era.
