DJ Jazzy Jeff
Jeffrey Allen Townes arrived in Philadelphia on the 22nd of January 1965. He grew up watching local block parties from a distance rather than dancing on the floor. At ten years old, he sat near the DJ setup and studied every move with intense focus. He told author Paul Stenning that these neighborhood figures made everyone move without anyone knowing their names. This observation sparked his decision to take the stage name DJ Jazzy Jeff. By his teenage years, he had built a reputation as a local school and block party DJ within his hometown.
Townes formed a duo with Will Smith known as DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. Their first major hit came in 1989 when they won the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. The winning track was Parents Just Don't Understand. They achieved even greater commercial success with Summertime which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That single earned them a second Grammy Award. The group released several gold and platinum-selling albums during the late 1980s and early 1990s. When Townes received his first Grammy win, he returned home crying because he only had $500 in his bank account at the time.
Will Smith branched out into television with the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990. Townes played a character named Jazz who served as Smith's best friend on the show. He started as a recurring character in the first season before becoming a regular cast member shortly thereafter. The two characters greeted each other with a signature handshake involving a mid-five swing and a point-back snap. A running joke throughout the series involved Uncle Phil physically ejecting Jazz from the house while making a comical guttural scream. This comedic element often used the same footage repeatedly or sometimes filmed new scenes instead. Jazz also harbored an unrequited crush on Hillary Banks played by Karyn Parsons.
After breaking up with Will Smith as a music partner, Townes established the A Touch of Jazz production company in Philadelphia. He became a prominent R&B soul and neo soul record producer for many artists. His work helped launch careers for Eric Roberson Jill Scott Musiq Soulchild and Eminem among others. He also produced songs for The Roots Raheem DeVaughn Talib Kweli Floetry Rhymefest and Darius Rucker. Some of his productions included scratches on tracks like When to Stand Up featuring Eminem in 1998. He continued to collaborate with Smith on projects such as Lost & Found where he produced the intro song Here He Comes.
Townes is credited along with DJ Spinbad and DJ Cash Money with popularizing the transformer scratch technique. One of the first records he appeared on was Street Artz Records by the Korner Boyz in 1985. That instrumental track was called Jazzy Jeff Scratch. This specific sound became a defining element of his turntablism style over decades. He performed scratch overdubs for the film Straight Outta Compton in 2015. His technical contributions remain central to how modern DJs approach vinyl manipulation today.
In July 2005 Townes performed with Will Smith at the Live 8 concert held in Philadelphia. They later toured together again in August 2017 at the MTV Summerblast Music Festival in Croatia and the Livewire Festival in Blackpool. The duo reunited for a performance on The Graham Norton Show in 2013. Townes released a mixtape titled He's the King...I'm the DJ in 2009 honoring Michael Jackson. Starting in 2010 he began releasing the Summertime: The Mixtape series every summer alongside Mick Boogie. In 2024 he joined New Kids on the Block as a supporting act on The Magic Summer Tour alongside Paula Abdul. He was announced in 2025 as one of the remixers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup theme representing Philadelphia.
