Delicious in Dungeon
Delicious in Dungeon, a manga by Ryoko Kui, opens with a red dragon swallowing a spellcaster named Falin Touden. Her surviving companions are cut off from most of their supplies, deep underground, with a rescue to attempt. Their answer is odd and practical. They will live off the creatures around them and cook whatever they can catch. Kui turns that grim premise into a story about appetite, curiosity and ecology. Why would an adventure about saving a friend hinge on meals? What did Kui draw on to build a world that stays below ground? And how did one fantasy series grow into an international hit, with an anime that sparked an argument over awards?
Somewhere in the dungeon lies the Golden Country, a kingdom whose own king crawled to the surface to announce it. He promised the entire realm to whoever could defeat the "Lunatic Magician". That offer sends adventuring parties down to raid the dungeon in the hope of finding the kingdom. Death does not always end an expedition here. Anyone killed in the dungeon can be revived, depending on how intact the body is. That rule drives the rescue, because Falin must be reached before the dragon digests her.
Falin used magic to teleport her party out of danger. Her brother Laios Touden is a swordsman and a tallman, which is the story's word for a human. Marcille Donato, an elven spellcaster, met Falin at school and became a close friend. Chilchuck Tims is a half-foot locksmith. Laios is fascinated by the dungeon's ecology and creatures, so he proposes that the group eat monsters. Marcille and Chilchuck agree, though reluctantly.
The dwarf Senshi joins them almost immediately. He has spent many years surviving in the dungeon by cooking monsters and harvesting food. The travels that follow take the party through different environments, traps and creatures, with a meal to match each one.
Izutsumi, an eastern tallman, arrives later. She hopes to undo a curse that binds a cat soul to her own. That curse gives the party a second mission, running alongside the rescue.
Ryoko Kui has said in an interview that she was a picky eater from childhood. As a child she liked drawing monsters and wondering which one was the strongest, and she mined those memories for the manga. At first she meant the dungeon story as a hobby. Her editor Masaru Hiroi encouraged her to turn it into a long-running series.
Kui's first choice for serialization was a science fiction manga, and Hiroi turned it down repeatedly. During those rejections he noticed the work on her desk that would become Delicious in Dungeon. He also chose the title. Her first draft held far too much material, so the editors cut many parts.
Kui had imagined characters who spoke in a range of languages. She dropped the idea, worried that it would bore readers and pull attention from the story. She also wanted the whole tale to stay inside the dungeon, so she first avoided surnames and avoided naming the country above it. Hiroi later asked her to add characters and widen the world.
The Neverending Story and The Lord of the Rings sat on Kui's reading list before serialization began. She also started reading Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks and playing role-playing games, including Legend of Grimrock. The game she named as her biggest inspiration was Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, released in 1990.
Harta, Enterbrain's seinen manga magazine, ran Delicious in Dungeon from the 15th of February 2014 to the 15th of September 2023. Enterbrain gathered the chapters into 14 tankōbon volumes, with the last arriving in December 2023. In October 2016, the North American publisher Yen Press announced that it had licensed the series. Its 14 English volumes appeared from the 23rd of May 2017 to the 23rd of July 2024.
Volume 1 reached 11th place on the weekly Oricon manga charts. It was the 87th best-selling manga volume in Japan between the 17th of November 2014 and the 17th of May 2015, with 315,298 copies sold. By August 2015 it had sold 381,614 copies. Volume 2 climbed to third place and had sold 362,906 copies by September 2015.
By August 2017, the first four volumes had more than 2 million copies in print. By October 2023, the manga had passed 10 million copies in circulation. Within about half a year of the anime premiere, that figure reached 14 million by March 2024, counting digital copies.
Da Vinci magazine placed the manga 13th in its Book of the Year ranking for 2015. The 2016 edition of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook ranked it first among its top 20 manga for male readers. The series was nominated for the 9th through 12th Manga Taishō, between 2016 and 2019. A San Diego Comic-Con panel in 2018 singled it out as one of the "Best Continuing Series for Kids/Teens". That same year it ranked second on Amazon Japan's best-selling Kindle book list.
The 55th Seiun Award gave it Best Comic in 2024. It also won Best Continuing Manga Series at the first American Manga Awards, presented by the Japan Society and Anime NYC. The Harvey Awards named it Best Manga the same year, and that was the year its anime aired.
Director Yoshihiro Miyajima had known Ryoko Kui's work since 2011. When the manga began serialization in 2014, he dreamed of one day adapting it. Trigger produced the series, which aired from the 4th of January to the 13th of June 2024 on Tokyo MX and other networks. It ran in two consecutive broadcast blocks, known as cours. Netflix licensed it for weekly worldwide streaming and simuldubbing.
Kui's own preference for composer was Yasunori Mitsuda, because she had liked his soundtrack for Chrono Cross. Shunsuke Tsuchiya shared the music duties with him. Character designer Naoki Takeda joined the project as a fan of the manga. The team also consulted a professional food designer, Mao Momichi, so the dishes would look delicious while keeping a monstrous feel.
Miyajima consulted Kui frequently and asked for her thoughts on the characters' inner perspectives. He found Delicious in Dungeon World Guide: The Adventurer's Bible, a detailed reference on the manga's world, very helpful.
About a hundred voice actors were invited to audition for each of Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck and Senshi. Laios proved the hardest to cast, because Miyajima wanted someone who could voice his eccentricity naturally. To help the actors understand what dungeon food might be like, the staff gave them insects to eat.
Bump of Chicken performed the opening theme of the first cours, and Ryokuoushoku Shakai performed its ending theme. A second season was announced in June 2024.
On Rotten Tomatoes, all six critics' reviews of the anime are positive. In the Anime Corner awards for Winter 2024, it won Best Adventure and Best Comedy, based on 62,120 votes.
The 9th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2025 told a different story. The series collected 16 nominations, including Anime of the Year, Best New Series, Best Comedy and Best Animation. Yoshihiro Miyajima was nominated for Best Director, Naoki Takeda for Best Character Design, and Senshi for Best Supporting Character. It also received nominations for voice performances in several languages, among them Japanese, English, German and Portuguese.
It won none of them. That result is recorded as the most losses without a single win by one series in one edition of the Crunchyroll awards. Fans began to speculate about a possible bias against shows on non-Crunchyroll platforms, and many asked whether the series had been deliberately overlooked. The show's worldwide streaming home was Netflix, not Crunchyroll.
On the 1st of August 2017, a stop motion animation appeared on YouTube to mark the release of the manga's fifth volume. On the 5th of September 2019, Trigger released an animated commercial promoting the eighth volume.
Kui also filled five short artbooks, titled Daydream Hour, with extra comics, sketches and full color illustrations. They came packaged with Harta volumes between the 12th of August 2016 and the 12th of August 2022. Unpublished illustrations went up on Harta's website for a limited time on the 11th of May 2020. A compilation artbook followed on the 15th of January 2024, and Yen Press released it in English on the 27th of May 2025.
A booklet written from Senshi's perspective, called Senshi's Diary, came with Harta on the 15th of April 2019. It was later folded into Delicious in Dungeon World Guide: The Adventurer's Bible, which appeared in Japan on the 13th of February 2021. Yen Press published that book in English on the 23rd of August 2022. A complete edition with additional pages added more, and the complete Senshi's Diary came with Harta on the 15th of April 2024. An updated and expanded guide reached Japan on the 15th of February 2024 and appeared in English from Yen Press on the 22nd of July 2025.
Arclight Games released a board game in Japan on the 15th of September 2022, and Yen Press brought it to English readers on the 26th of May 2026. A food-replica exhibition ran at Shibuya N-space from the 18th to the 21st of January 2024. A larger Ryoko Kui and Delicious in Dungeon exhibition began touring Japan in 2024 and reached New York for the 10th to the 26th of October 2025.
