Détroit
Détroit is a French musical duo formed in 2012 by Bertrand Cantat and bass player Pascal Humbert. Their name echoes a city, but this project was born far from Michigan, out of the wreckage of a celebrated French rock band and two musicians who had each spent years in very different corners of the world. The questions their story raises are not about geography. They are about what happens when long careers collide, and what kind of music emerges when two people with that much experience finally find themselves in the same room.
Pascal Humbert spent years at the center of the rock formation Passion Fodder, a band he was part of from 1985 to 1991. When Passion Fodder split up, his path turned sharply toward America. He went on to join the American band 16 Horsepower, then moved through Lilium and Wovenhand among others, accumulating a transatlantic range of sound that few French musicians could match.
Bertrand Cantat followed a different route after Passion Fodder's era. He built Noir Désir into one of the most prominent bands in French rock. That band's breakup in 2010 left Cantat without a primary vehicle for his work. The gap between the two musicians' solo trajectories made their eventual collaboration feel unlikely, which may be exactly what made it interesting.
Before Détroit existed as a named project, Cantat and Humbert were already working together. In 2011, the two collaborated on an album called Choeurs alongside musicians Bernard Falaise and Alexander MacSween. The music was not a standalone record in the conventional sense. It was composed specifically for Wajdi Mouawad's production of a trilogy drawn from Sophocles, a work known as Le Cycle des Femmes: Trois histoires de Sophocle, sometimes shortened to Des Femmes. Writing music for ancient Greek tragedy, filtered through a contemporary stage director, gave both musicians a shared creative language before they committed to a duo.
Détroit's first album, Horizons, arrived on the 18th of November 2013. It was recorded at Vega Studios and produced by both Pascal Humbert and Bruno Green. The album had been awaited with considerable anticipation, and the lead single bore that out almost immediately. "Droit dans le soleil" entered the SNEP Top 10 in its very first week on the French charts. The single also found audiences in Belgium's French-language market and in Switzerland, pointing to a reach that extended well past the French border.
On the full album charts, Horizons reached number 2 in France, number 16 in the French-language Belgian market, number 5 in the Wallonia chart, and number 10 in Switzerland. A second release, La Cigale, followed in 2014, reaching number 1 in France and number 25 in Switzerland, where it also earned a certification.
