Carmel, Indiana
In the 1820s, the United States government put lands in what is now Hamilton County up for sale. Farmers flocked to the west bank of the White River seeking new opportunities. The first settlers were predominantly Quakers who established communities along the waterway. Daniel Warren, Alexander Mills, John Phelps, and Seth Green donated their adjoining properties of equal size to create a town. They recorded this plat in 1837 under the name Bethlehem. A clock tower later appeared at the intersection of Rangeline Road and Main Street as a gift from the local Rotary Club in 2002. The Carmel Clay Historical Society began its activities that same year. A post office named Carmel opened in 1846 because Indiana already had a post office called Bethlehem.
