Boomerang
A boomerang is a thrown tool shaped to spin about an axis as it flies, and in its truest form, to return to the hand that threw it. At Farm Cove, in Port Jackson, in December 1804, colonial witnesses recorded a demonstration of that return in the Sydney Gazette: a "bent, edged waddy" thrown by a man named Bungary "twirled round in the air with astonishing velocity," struck an opponent's arm, and then "rebounded to a distance not less than 70 or 80 yards," a flight of roughly 64 to 73 meters. What could make a piece of wood come back like that, and how far back does the design actually go? The word itself comes from an Aboriginal Australian language of the Sydney region, and strictly it refers only to returning objects, though "non-returning boomerang" has entered common use for the broader family of throwing sticks. The oldest surviving Aboriginal boomerang, held today in the South Australian Museum, was pulled from a peat bog and dated to 10,000 BC. This is the story of a hunting tool that became a sport, a musical instrument, a fire-starter, and eventually a piece of branding stamped onto an entire nation's tourist souvenirs.
Rock art in the Kimberley region of Australia depicts boomerangs being thrown at kangaroos and other animals, and some of that art is potentially up to 50,000 years old. The oldest surviving Australian Aboriginal boomerang itself was recovered from the Wyrie Swamp in South Australia in 1973, dated to 10,000 BC, and is now held by the South Australian Museum in Adelaide. Europe has its own ancient example: a boomerang-like weapon found in Oblazowa Cave in Poland's Carpathian Mountains, reported in 1987, was carved from mammoth tusk and dated by AMS analysis to about 40,000 years old, the earliest certain find of this type of weapon anywhere in the world. Stencils and paintings of boomerangs also appear in the rock art of West Papua, including at Bird's Head Peninsula and Kaimana, likely dating to the Last Glacial Maximum, between roughly 24,000 and 16,000 BCE, a period when lower sea levels connected Papua to Arnhem Land in Northern Australia. King Tutankhamun owned a collection of boomerangs, and non-returning weapons resembling them have also been documented among ancient Egyptians, Native Americans in California and Arizona, and inhabitants of South India, all used for killing birds and rabbits. An 1883 study catalogued further ancient Egyptian and African examples, though these too proved to be non-returning tools rather than the returning kind. In the Netherlands, examples known as cateia, dating to the first century BC, have been excavated at Vlaardingen and Velsen.
In 1798, colonial administrator David Collins listed "Wo-mur-rang" among eight Aboriginal "Names of clubs," though he was likely describing the woomera, a spear-thrower rather than a boomerang. An anonymous 1790 manuscript on the Aboriginal languages of New South Wales recorded "Boo-mer-rit" as "the Scimitar." The first written account of a boomerang's return flight came from Francis Louis Barrallier, a French-born ensign of the New South Wales Corps, in November 1802. By 1822, the weapon had been described and recorded as "bou-mar-rang" in the language of the Dharawal people, a Darug sub-group living near the Georges River by Port Jackson; the Dharawal used separate words for their non-returning hunting sticks but applied "boomerang" specifically to the returning throw-stick. Spelling stayed unsettled for decades afterward, appearing as "bomerang," "bommerang," "bomring," "boomereng," "boomering," and "bumerang" before the modern form took hold, entering American English by way of the Boston Daily Advertiser in 1846 and becoming a verb in Australian English during the 1850s.
According to Tony Butz, a former history teacher, linguist, and founder of the Boomerang Throwing Association of New South Wales, the returning boomerang was unknown to Aboriginal peoples across most of the Northern Territory, all of Tasmania, half of South Australia, and the northern parts of Queensland and Western Australia. By his account, roughly 60 percent of Aboriginal groups used both returning boomerangs and non-returning hunting sticks, a further 10 percent had only non-returning sticks, and the remaining 30 percent used neither. Non-returning hunting sticks, sometimes called "throwsticks" or "kylies," could inflict mortal injury on large animals from about 100 meters away when they weighed around 2 kilograms, and expert hunters were said to be able to kill an animal 160 meters distant. One hunting technique relied on the boomerang's resemblance to a hawk in flight: thrown to hover above a flock of ducks, it triggered a dive away from the perceived predator, driving the birds toward hunters waiting with nets or clubs. Beyond hunting, boomerangs served as percussion instruments in formal dance ceremonies, used both by dancers and as substitutes for clapsticks, with styles and decorations varying widely among different clans across Australia. A traditionally made boomerang took real time to produce: after cutting a suitably shaped piece of wood, the maker let it dry for weeks before spending days scraping it down to the finished shape, a method still practiced in some remote parts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Boomerangs range enormously in size, from smaller than 10 centimeters tip to tip up to more than 180 centimeters in length, and historically they served far more purposes than hunting alone: as percussive musical instruments, battle clubs, fire-starters, decoys for hunting waterfowl, and recreational toys. Medium-weight "non-returning boomerangs" were sometimes thrown at enemies in close-quarters fighting, while larger versions, up to 2 meters long, were carried and used as fighting sticks rather than thrown at all; recent evidence suggests boomerangs saw genuine use as war weapons, even though the classic returning boomerang was never used in warfare because of its wide, unpredictable arc. Heavier hunting sticks doubled as tools away from the hunt, used to kill fish trapped in rock pools at low tide and as digging implements for foraging root vegetables. In the later 20th century, a distinct movement in independently designed "art boomerangs" emerged, often bearing little resemblance to traditional forms and ranging from animal-inspired and humorous shapes to purely abstract designs, made possible in part by modern thin plywoods and synthetic plastics; some of these objects, built primarily as art, lack the aerodynamic properties needed to actually return. Boomerangs have also been proposed as an alternative to clay pigeons in shotgun sports, since a boomerang's flight mimics the flight of a bird more closely and offers a more challenging target.
A returning boomerang functions as a rotating wing, built from two or more arms connected at an angle, with each arm shaped as an airfoil in cross-section. A right-handed boomerang flies a counter-clockwise, circular path to the left, while a left-handed one flies clockwise to the right, the only structural difference being that the leading edges of the airfoil are reversed. Most sport boomerangs weigh between 70 and 110 grams, span 250 to 300 millimeters, and travel a range of 20 to 40 meters. As the thrown boomerang spins, each wing generates more lift during the half of its rotation when its own spin speed adds to the forward speed of the throw than during the half when the two subtract from each other; thrown nearly upright, this means each blade produces more lift at the top of its arc than at the bottom. Rather than simply tilting around the axis of travel, the boomerang's angular momentum causes gyroscopic precession, tilting the plane of rotation about an axis 90 degrees to the direction of flight, which is what curves the object back toward the thrower. Thrown flat, like a Frisbee, that same precession instead sends the boomerang flying straight up before it crashes. The effect holds even off Earth: in 1992, German astronaut Ulf Merbold demonstrated aboard Spacelab that boomerangs behave the same way in zero gravity, an experiment French astronaut Jean-Francois Clervoy repeated aboard Mir in 1997 and Japanese astronaut Takao Doi repeated again on the International Space Station in 2008. Long-distance boomerangs are shaped more like a question mark and fly in an S-curve rather than the circular or teardrop path of a classic returning design, and some models add turbulators, small bumps or pits on the upper surface that keep airflow attached and boost lift.
Modern sport boomerangs are built from Finnish birch plywood, hardwood, or plastics such as ABS, polypropylene, phenolic paper, or carbon-fiber-reinforced composites, most weighing under 100 grams, with MTA competition boomerangs, used for the maximum-time-aloft event, often under 25 grams. Competitions test distinct skills: Aussie Round asks a thrower to send the boomerang across a 50-meter circle and bring it back to the center across five attempts, Accuracy scores how close it lands to that center, Endurance counts catches made in five minutes, and Long Distance measures how far the boomerang travels from a 40-meter baseline before it must cross back over on return. On the 3rd of June 2007, Tim Lendrum scored 96 out of 100 in Aussie Round, setting a national record that equaled the existing world record, throwing a model called an "AYR" made by boomerang maker Adam Carroll. Swiss thrower Manuel Schutz won the individual World Championship title in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2012, and 2016, while Fridolin Frost of Germany took it in 1992, 1998, 2006, and 2008; Schutz also holds several individual world records, including a Long Distance mark of 238 meters set in 1999 in Kloten. Australian Sadir Kattan set the Guinness World Record for smallest returning boomerang in 1997, a piece just 48 millimeters long and 46 millimeters wide that still completed the required 20-meter flight. On the 15th of March 2005, David Schummy set the Guinness World Record for the longest throw of any object by a human, sending a boomerang 427.2 meters at Murarrie Recreation Ground in Australia, breaking a mark Erin Hemmings had set in 2003 by throwing an Aerobie 406.3 meters at Fort Funston, San Francisco.
"Aboriginalia," a term that includes the boomerang among its imagery, entered widespread use as a symbol of Australia in the late 1940s and early 1950s, embraced by a largely European community of artists, craftspeople, and designers. By the 1960s, the Australian tourism industry had folded the image into the country's branding for both overseas and domestic visitors, selling it back as souvenirs and gifts detached from its Aboriginal origins. That marketing wave unfolded at the very moment Aboriginal people were being forced from their traditional lands under assimilation policies that produced the Stolen Generations, giving the boomerang's souvenir version an especially bitter irony, one that found a foothold at holiday resorts and inside Australian homes. Trademarks using the boomerang as a company symbol date back further still, including Bain's White Ant Exterminator in 1896, Webendorfer Bros. explosives in 1898, E. A. Adams Foods in 1920, and the still-operating Boomerang Cigarette Papers Pty. Ltd. In the 21st century, the same kitsch souvenir objects from the 1940s through the 1970s, once sold cheaply to tourists, have become sought after by both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal collectors, drawing renewed attention from Aboriginal artists and cultural commentators examining what those decades of branding actually represented.
