  • Bobby Flay, born Robert William Flay, was eight years old when he asked for an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas. His father thought a G.I. Joe would be a better present for a boy. Flay ended up with both. Today he is an American celebrity chef, food writer, restaurateur, and television personality. His story runs from that toy oven to casino dining rooms, a baseball stadium, game-show sets, and a cat food brand. Along the way, this documentary asks how a young cook found the regional style that would define him. It asks what happens to a restaurant empire when landlords, condominiums, and guidebooks get a vote. And it asks what a victory pose can cost a competitor in a televised cook-off.

  • Flay was born on the 10th of December 1964 in New York City, to Bill and Dorothy Barbara (McGuirk) Flay. He grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a fourth generation Irish American raised Catholic. His schooling took place at denominational schools.

At age 17, Flay left high school without finishing. His earliest restaurant jobs were at a pizza parlor and at Baskin-Robbins. Next came a station making salads at Joe Allen Restaurant in Manhattan's Theater District, where his father was a partner. The owner, Joe Allen, saw natural ability in the teenager. He agreed to pay his partner's son's tuition at the French Culinary Institute.

In 1984, Flay graduated with a degree in culinary arts as part of the first graduating class at the French Culinary Institute. He started work as a sous-chef and learned quickly. At the Brighton Grill on Third Avenue, he was handed the executive chef position a week after the previous executive chef was fired. Flay quit soon afterward, because he realized he was not ready to run a kitchen.

Jonathan Waxman, a restaurateur, hired Flay as a chef at Bud and Jams. Waxman introduced him to southwestern cooking, which came to define his culinary career. A brief spell on the floor of the American Stock Exchange followed. Flay then returned to kitchens as executive chef of Miracle Grill in the East Village, working there from 1988 to 1990.

Jerome Kretchmer was hunting for a southwestern-style chef when Flay's food caught his attention. Kretchmer offered him the executive chef job at Mesa Grill, which opened on the 15th of January 1991. Flay became a partner shortly afterward. In November 1993, he teamed up with Laurence Kretchmer to open Bolo Bar & Restaurant in the Flatiron District, just a few blocks from Mesa Grill.

  • Caesars Palace in Las Vegas received a second Mesa Grill in 2004. In 2005, Flay opened Bar Americain, an American brasserie in Midtown Manhattan. Bobby Flay Steak followed at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey. On the 28th of March 2007, a third Mesa Grill opened in the Bahamas, at The Cove at Atlantis Paradise Island.

The Las Vegas Mesa Grill earned Flay his only Michelin Star in 2008. The 2009 edition took the star away. Michelin published no Las Vegas edition for 2010 or 2011, so Flay had no chance to win it back.

Bolo Bar & Restaurant closed its doors on the 31st of December 2007. The space was cleared to make way for a condominium.

The French Culinary Institute, his old school, drew Flay back as a master instructor and visiting chef. He is not currently teaching classes, but he drops in when his schedule allows. In 2003, he established the Bobby Flay Scholarship, a full scholarship to the institute. It goes each year to a student in the Long Island City Culinary Arts Program, and Flay personally helps choose the winner.

The Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, Long Island, hosted the first Bobby's Burger Palace on the 15th of July 2008. At its peak, the chain counted nineteen locations in eleven states and the District of Columbia. In September 2013, the original Mesa Grill in New York closed after the landlord proposed a rent increase.

In May 2021, the Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace became an Italian restaurant, Amalfi by Bobby Flay, with an updated menu. The Las Vegas Bobby's Burger Palace was renamed Bobby's Burgers. Flay now has four Bobby's Burgers locations, at Caesars Palace, Paris Hotel, and Harrah's in Las Vegas, and at Yankee Stadium in New York City.

  • Food Network has been Flay's television home since 1995. Across Food Network and Cooking Channel, he has hosted seventeen cooking shows and specials. On Throwdown! with Bobby Flay, he challenges cooks known for a particular dish or style to a cook-off of their signature dish. Beat Bobby Flay works the other way, pitting select chefs against him to see whether they can cook something better than his version. He has also judged The Next Food Network Star and The Next Iron Chef, and he has cooked on Emeril Live and Paula's Party.

Bobby's Vegas Gamble covered the opening of Mesa Grill Las Vegas. In Restaurant Revamp, Flay tried to help a family restaurant. Chefography: Bobby Flay profiled his life and career. Tasting Ireland sent him on a food tour of the country his family came from. On All-Star Grill Fest: South Beach, he joined Paula Deen, Giada De Laurentiis, Alton Brown, and Tyler Florence for a barbecue.

In 1996, Flay hosted The Main Ingredient with Bobby Flay on Lifetime Television. Twice a month, he does a cooking segment on CBS's The Early Show. From March to May 2011, he hosted America's Next Great Restaurant on NBC, picking one restaurant team to open a restaurant with. Low ratings ended the show after its first season. He has also appeared in several episodes of Great Chefs.

Sirius XM Satellite Radio gave Flay a weekly call-in show in 2009. He offered men advice on "everything from sports to current issues," though food stayed at the center.

An estimate in September 2019 put Flay's net worth at $30 million. In October 2021, Variety reported that he would leave Food Network after 27 years, because he and the network had not agreed on a new contract. People reported that he had sought $100 million in that negotiation. A month later, in November 2021, Flay signed a new three-year deal with Food Network.

  • In 2000, the original Iron Chef show traveled to New York for a special battle. Flay challenged Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto to a contest built around rock crab. When the hour ended, Flay stood on top of his cutting board and raised his arms. One journalist called the gesture "premature victory."

Morimoto felt that real chefs treat cutting boards and knives as sacred, and the flamboyant display offended him. He criticized Flay's professionalism and said Flay was "not a chef." Flay lost the battle. He then challenged Morimoto to a rematch in Morimoto's native Japan, and this time Flay won.

Flay later became an Iron Chef himself on Iron Chef America. On a special episode that first aired on the 12th of November 2006, he and Giada De Laurentiis faced Mario Batali and Rachael Ray. Flay and De Laurentiis lost. That broadcast became the highest rated show ever aired on Food Network.

A special episode titled "Thanksgiving Showdown" first aired on the 16th of November 2008. Flay and Michael Symon defeated Iron Chefs Cat Cora and Masaharu Morimoto.

Montreal cooking show host Chuck Hughes beat Flay in an episode recorded in July 2010 and broadcast in March 2011. The win made Hughes the youngest Canadian champ.

  • On the 18th of November 2003, Flay appeared on the game show Pyramid as a guest celebrity alongside fellow Iron Chef Mario Batali. The Disney Channel original movie Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off gave him a cameo as the host of the cook-off. During the 2004-05 season, he was a judge on the CBS show Wickedly Perfect.

The Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Design" aired on the 22nd of September 2005 with Flay in the cast. In 2006, he played himself in the film East Broadway, where his then-wife, Stephanie March, had a larger part.

On the 12th of March 2008, Jeopardy! featured a special "Throwdown with Bobby Flay" category, with every clue about him. That same year, he played for the National League in the Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game at Yankee Stadium, after the 2008 MLB All Star Game. The film Step Brothers also mentioned him in the "Derek comes for dinner" scene.

The South Park episode "Crème Fraiche" impersonated Flay in 2010. In 2011, he made recurring appearances in the final season of Entourage as the boyfriend of Ari Gold's wife. A 2012 director's cut of the Portlandia episode Brunch Village showed him teaching director Jonathan Krisel to make marionberry pancakes.

Flay guest starred as himself on season two of Younger, which first aired in 2016. In 2018, he voiced Fred Jones' uncle in the animated film Scooby-Doo! and the Gourmet Ghost. He played a food and restaurant critic in the 2022 made-for-TV movie One Delicious Christmas. In 2024, he danced in a Pepsi commercial about grilling.

  • Bobby Flay's Bold American Food, published by Warner Books on the 31st of May 1994, was his first cookbook on the list. Clarkson Potter released From My Kitchen to Your Table in March 1998. Hyperion followed with Boy Meets Grill in May 1999 and Bobby Flay Cooks American in September 2001. Scribner published Boy Gets Grill in May 2004 and Grilling For Life in May 2005.

Clarkson Potter became his regular publisher from 2007. Mesa Grill Cookbook arrived in October 2007, then Grill It! in April 2008 and Burgers, Fries and Shakes in April 2009. The Bar Americain Cookbook came out in September 2011, Throwdown in October 2012, and Barbecue Addiction in April 2013. Bobby Flay Fit, co-written with Stephanie Banyas and Sally Jackson, appeared in December 2017. Bobby at Home reached shelves on the 24th of September 2019.

New York Magazine named Mesa Grill its Gael Greene's Restaurant of the Year in 1992. In 1993, Flay received the French Culinary Institute's Outstanding Graduate Award and the James Beard Foundation's Rising Star Chef of the Year award. In 1995, Bold American Food won an International Association of Culinary Professionals Award for Design.

Four Daytime Emmy Awards sit on his shelf. Boy Meets Grill won Outstanding Service Show Host in 2005, and Grill It! With Bobby Flay won Best Culinary Program in 2009. Bobby Flay's Barbecue Addiction won Outstanding Culinary Host in both 2014 and 2015.

Flay won the James Beard Foundation's National Television Food Show Award in 2005 for Bobby Flay Chef Mentor. Two years later, in 2007, he won the foundation's Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America honor. In 2015, he was inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame. That same year, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

  • Flay married Debra Ponzek, also a chef, on the 11th of May 1991, and the couple divorced in 1993. In 1995, he married Kate Connelly, and they have a daughter. They separated in 1998 and later divorced. On the 20th of February 2005, he married actress Stephanie March. Their divorce came in July 2015.

Flay dated Heléne Yorke from February 2016 to early 2019. In November 2021, he went public with girlfriend Christina Perez after about a year of dating, and the couple broke up in 2024. As of March 2025, he is in a relationship with fellow chef Brooke Williamson.

Flay calls himself a cat person and has lived with cats most of his life. Three Maine Coons have shared his home. Nacho was an orange tabby, Stella is a brown tabby five years younger than Nacho, and the third is Canelo. In October 2023, Flay announced that Nacho had died.

In April 2021, Flay launched Made by Nacho with Elly Truesdell and Katja Lang. The premium cat food company is named for Nacho Flay. It sells wet cat food, dry kibble, and freeze-dried protein treats, along with a subscription service. Products are available on its website and at PetSmart. Flay also founded the Made By Nacho Charitable Fund as part of The New York Community Trust.

Thoroughbred horse racing is another passion. His filly More Than Real won the prestigious Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2010. From 2014 to 2018, Flay served on the Breeders' Cup board of directors. As a part owner, he shared in the 2016 Belmont Stakes win of Creator, the third jewel of the Triple Crown. In 2021, Pizza Bianca, a filly Flay bred himself, won the same Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf that More Than Real had won eleven years earlier.
