The University of Southern Denmark emerged in 1998 from a complex consolidation. Odense University, the Southern Denmark School of Business and Engineering, and the South Jutland University Centre merged to form this new institution.
Six campuses now spread across southern Denmark and Zealand. Campus Odense sits on Funen while campus Slagelse and campus Copenhagen occupy Zealand. Kolding, Esbjerg, and Alsion in Sønderborg anchor the Jutland peninsula.
Jens Ringsmose currently serves as rector while Helle Waagepetersen holds the Pro-vice-chancellor position. The rector gets appointed directly by a nine-member board that includes five members recruited outside the university.

The university maintains joint programmes with German institutions including the University of Flensburg and the University of Kiel. Active membership exists within UArctic, an international cooperative network based in the Circumpolar Arctic region.
