University of Southern Denmark
The University of Southern Denmark emerged in 1998 from a complex consolidation. Odense University, the Southern Denmark School of Business and Engineering, and the South Jutland University Centre merged to form this new institution. The University Library of Southern Denmark joined the fold that same year. This merger created an entity with roots stretching back to 1966 when the original Odense University was established. By 2016, the university celebrated its 50-year anniversary on September 15. The queen of Denmark visited SDU in October of that year to mark the occasion.

A nine-member board governs the university with specific composition rules. Five members recruited outside the university form the majority. One member is appointed by scientific staff, one by administrative staff, and two by students. The rector gets appointed directly by this board. Jens Ringsmose currently serves as rector while Helle Waagepetersen holds the Pro-vice-chancellor position. Deans are appointed by the rector who then appoint heads of departments. No faculty senate exists within the structure. Faculty members play no role in selecting rectors, deans, or department heads. This absence creates a system without traditional faculty governance.

The university maintains joint programmes with German institutions including the University of Flensburg and the University of Kiel. Active membership exists within UArctic, an international cooperative network based in the Circumpolar Arctic region. This network comprises more than 200 universities, colleges, and other organizations promoting education and research in the Arctic region. Participation extends to north2north mobility programs enabling students to study in different parts of the North. Princess Marie became a patron of the university in 2009, participating in annual parties for several years following her appointment.
