Critics gave the game a mixed to positive reception, praising the updated graphics but criticizing the $40 price, the Way of the Hado mode's motion controls, and Joy-Con control problems. IGN called it the most complete version of Street Fighter II to date but said the anniversary additions do not excite.
The game reached number 8 on the UK sales chart, number 3 in Japan, number 2 in Australia, number 3 in New Zealand, number 3 in Switzerland, and number 2 on the US eShop behind Minecraft. In August 2017, the Wall Street Journal reported the game had sold over 450,000 copies, more than Capcom expected, with total sales later crossing 500,000.
