Tony McNamara is an Australian playwright, screenwriter, and television producer born in 1967 in Kilmore, Victoria. He is best known for co-writing The Favourite (2018) with Deborah Davis and writing Poor Things (2023), both directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, as well as creating The Great television series.
McNamara worked in catering and finance before a visit to Rome led him to pursue writing as a career. He studied writing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and trained in screenwriting at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
Tony McNamara has received two Academy Award nominations. He shared the Best Original Screenplay nomination for The Favourite (2018) with co-writer Deborah Davis, and he received the Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Poor Things (2023).
