  Tony McNamara was born in 1967 in Kilmore, a small town within the state of Victoria, Australia. He attended Assumption College during his early schooling years before leaving to pursue other paths. His professional life began far from the world of storytelling as he worked in catering and finance industries for many years. A single trip to Rome changed the trajectory of his entire career forever. That journey inspired him to abandon his previous jobs and commit fully to writing instead. He enrolled at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology to study writing formally. Later he moved on to attend the Australian Film, Television and Radio School for screenwriting training.

  McNamara wrote numerous television episodes and stage plays throughout the late nineteen nineties and early two thousands. The Secret Life of Us became one of his most notable credits with twelve episodes written between 2001 and 2005. Love My Way followed shortly after where he contributed seven episodes from 2004 until 2007. Tangle saw him write seven more episodes spanning from 2009 through 2012. Puberty Blues added another seven episodes to his resume between 2012 and 2014. These projects established his reputation across Australian television networks long before international fame arrived. His work on these series demonstrated a consistent ability to handle complex character dynamics within ensemble casts.

• 3. The Favourite Collaboration

  Yorgos Lanthimos approached McNamara in 2018 to co-write the historical comedy-drama film known as The Favourite. Emma Stone starred as the lead actress alongside other prominent performers in this period piece. Deborah Davis had originally written the screenplay twenty years prior to the films release date. Lanthimos and McNamara worked together extensively to complete the final version of that script. Their collaboration earned them an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Critics praised their unique approach to blending historical accuracy with dark humor throughout the production. The film also received nominations from the BAFTA Awards and Golden Globe Awards ceremonies.

  Hulu premiered The Great on the 15th of May 2020 as a new comedy-drama series about Catherine the Great. Elle Fanning played the title role while Nicholas Hoult appeared as her husband Peter III. McNamara adapted the project directly from his own stage play which debuted at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2008. He served as both creator and writer across thirty episodes spanning three seasons until 2023. An Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series recognized his work on the show. The adaptation brought his theatrical vision into a modern streaming format that reached global audiences quickly.

• 5. Poor Things And Future Projects

  McNamara returned to collaborate again with Yorgos Lanthimos for the 2023 film Poor Things. Emma Stone reprised her lead role once more in this surreal period piece. The screenplay won him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside other accolades. In April 2024 reports confirmed he would script the upcoming comic book adaptation titled Avengelyne. Olivia Wilde will direct that project while Margot Robbie produces through LuckyChap Entertainment. By April 2025 he was co-writing a Star Wars film together with Taika Waititi. These upcoming projects signal a continued expansion of his influence within major Hollywood productions.
