The United States Air Force launched Strategic Studies Quarterly in 2007 through its publishing arm, Air University Press. This new journal aimed to address pressing national and international security issues for the Department of Defense.
Quarterly print editions appeared on the first days of March, June, September, and December until the run ended in 2021. Each issue contained peer-reviewed content designed for serious readers within the defense community.
An online talk show called Issues and Answers launched in early 2017 to expand the journal's reach beyond printed pages. The program featured interviews and discussion panels with United States Department of Defense subject matter experts and outside academics.
Readers included officers, analysts, and scholars working on national security challenges. The journal prioritized rigorous scholarship over popular commentary to maintain credibility among its specialized audience.
The final issue of Strategic Studies Quarterly appeared in 2021 after fourteen years of continuous publication. Air University Press shortly thereafter inaugurated the new journal Aether: A Journal of Strategic Airpower & Spacepower.
