• 1. Introduction

  Air University Press operates from Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, tucked inside the Muir S. Fairchild Research Information Center. It is not a commercial publisher chasing bestseller lists. Its mission is narrower and more specific: to publish the research, journals, and professional papers that fuel the education of military officers. The questions worth asking are what exactly this press produces, who reads it, and why a military university needed its own publishing arm in the first place. The answers reach into the architecture of professional military education itself and into some of the most closely watched security debates of the present day.

• 2. What the Press Publishes

  Faculty and student research sit at the core of the Press's output, alongside academic journals and documents that support Air University's broader program of professional military education. School-selected student papers also make the cut, meaning the strongest work produced inside Air University's classrooms can reach a wider audience. The Press is organized under the Academic Services Directorate, which positions it as an academic rather than a public-affairs operation. Its purpose is to advance the intellectual life of the institution, not to manage its image.

• 3. Paper Series and Their Schools

  Each of Air University's major schools has its own named paper series, and the names carry their own weight. The Air War College contributes the Maxwell Papers, named for the base itself. The Air Command and Staff College produces the Wright Flyers, a nod to aviation's origins. The School of Advanced Air and Space Studies publishes the Drew Papers. Beyond those three, the Press also maintains the Fairchild, Walker, Chennault, and Kenney series, each named for figures significant to airpower history. The Drew Papers, coming out of the school devoted to advanced air and space studies, signal an ambition that runs past introductory doctrine.

• 4. The Journals

  Air and Space Power Journal is the professional journal of the Air Force, and it comes out of this press. Strategic Studies Quarterly focuses on national and international security, and it carries the designation "distinguished" in the Press's own description of it. Two regionally focused journals round out the portfolio: the Journal of Indo-Pacific Affairs and the Journal of the Americas. That pairing reflects where American strategic attention has been concentrated in recent years, with the Indo-Pacific drawing particular focus from defense planners and policymakers.

• 5. A Relaunch and a New Mandate

  In 2025, the Press went temporarily offline to ensure compliance with an executive order, working through its extensive backlist of books, journals, and paper series. The relaunch came in two stages: new books and journal issues began appearing on the 18th of April 2025, and the rebranded website went live on the 21st of April 2025. The Press announced at that point that it would prioritize publications supporting operational readiness and strategic capabilities for warfighters, aligning with the Department of Defense and Department of the Air Force's renewed focus on warfighting effectiveness and lethality. That shift in stated priorities marked a concrete change in editorial direction. Membership in the Association of University Presses, which the Press joined in 2020, places it inside a broader community of academic publishers even as its mandate turns toward the operational.
