Spelljammer: Adventures in Space is a boxed set for the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons, published by Wizards of the Coast and released on the 16th of August 2022. The box contains three 64-page hardcover sourcebooks, a Dungeon Master's screen, and a poster map of the asteroid-city Rock of Bral. It updates the original 1989 Spelljammer campaign setting for 5th edition rules.
The boxed set includes the Astral Adventurer's Guide (a campaign setting guide introducing six new player races and sixteen ship stat blocks), Boo's Astral Menagerie (a bestiary with 72 creature stat blocks from Wildspace and the Astral Sea), and Light of Xaryxis (an episodic adventure module). Light of Xaryxis takes player characters from 5th level to 8th level across chapters that each end in a cliffhanger.
Six new playable races are introduced: the Astral Elf, Autognome, Giff, Hadozee, Plasmoid, and Thri-Kreen. The Autognome and Giff were established Spelljammer races, while the Hadozee, Thri-Kreen, and Plasmoids originated as adaptations of races from TSR's Star Frontiers, published in 1982.
On the 2nd of September 2022, Wizards of the Coast issued a formal apology for offensive content related to the Hadozee player race, whose new origin story depicted a wizard granting them sapience in order to sell them as warrior slaves. Critics also identified images in the book that recalled racist minstrel shows, and Wizards removed the content from digital editions while committing to remove it from future print editions. In November 2022, Christopher Perkins announced a new inclusion review process requiring multiple outside cultural consultants at every stage of development prior to publication.
Chris Funk, guitarist for the Decemberists, produced Spelljams after being approached by lead designer Chris Perkins. Each song was written by a different artist inspired by a chapter from the Light of Xaryxis adventure module, with contributors including Magic Sword, Osees, and Reggie Watts. The soundtrack was released digitally on the 16th of August 2022, with a physical release as four themed two-disk LP vinyl records.
CGMagazine's Chris de Hoog rated Spelljammer: Adventures in Space 9.5 out of 10, calling the decision to split material across three sourcebooks a wise move. Polygon's Samantha Nelson praised Light of Xaryxis as an excellent introduction to the setting, and TechRaptor's Andrew Stretch called the full set a strong entry point for players who find high fantasy limiting.
