Walter Sullivan is an undead serial killer who believes his biological mother is trapped within Henry Townshend's apartment. He has committed nineteen murders and attempts to perform a ritual requiring twenty-one murders to be completed.
A hole suddenly appears in the wall of Henry Townshend's bathroom, creating a gateway to alternate dimensions that he must explore to survive. The apartment itself serves as the only save point and the only place where Henry can store items.
Eileen Galvin is Henry's neighbor who joins him in the second half of the game to provide crucial assistance in combat. She is a child manifestation of Walter Sullivan, a fact that adds a layer of tragedy to her role in the story.
The game features four possible endings determined by whether or not Eileen survives and the condition of Henry's apartment. Eileen's survival or death directly affects the ending achieved and the fate of the building.
