Shinji Hashimoto joined Squaresoft, which later became Square Enix, in 1986 as a marketing staff member for Kidō Senshi Z-Gundam: Hot Scramble. His early credits included work on Famicom Jump: Hero Retsuden and Dragon Ball Z JoJo's Bizarre Adventure during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The concept for Kingdom Hearts emerged from an accidental conversation Shinji Hashimoto had with a Disney executive inside an elevator. Both companies shared a building in Tokyo at the time, creating frequent opportunities for informal interaction that led to a crossover between Square Enix characters and Disney properties.
Shinji Hashimoto officially retired from his duties at Square Enix on the 31st of May 2022 following decades of service. He announced plans to work as Corporate Advisor within Square Enix Holdings in May 2021 before stepping down from his position as executive director and brand manager.
On the 16th of June 2022, Shinji Hashimoto announced new positions outside of Square Enix including becoming a senior advisor at Sony Music Entertainment Japan. He also took a seat as a board member for ForwardWorks to reflect his continued influence in the entertainment sector beyond traditional game production.
