The Professional Football Researchers Association was founded on the 22nd of June, 1979, in Canton, Ohio. Writer and historian Bob Carroll established it along with six other football researchers.
The Coffin Corner is a bimonthly magazine devoted to professional football history, published six times a year by the PFRA. Membership in the organization, which costs $35.00 annually, includes a subscription to all six issues.
The Hall of Very Good is an annual PFRA project that recognizes outstanding players, coaches, and contributors who have not been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The list has been published each year since 2003, and an asterisk marks names who were subsequently inducted into Canton.
The Ralph Hay Award is presented by the PFRA for lifetime achievement in pro football research and historiography. It is named after Ralph Hay, the Canton Bulldogs owner whose Hupmobile automobile showroom hosted the NFL's first organizational meeting.
The PFRA has partnered with McFarland and Company on a series called Great Teams in Pro Football History, edited by George Bozeka. Published volumes include books about the 1966 Green Bay Packers (2016), the 1958 Baltimore Colts (2018), and the 1951 Los Angeles Rams (2022), with a book on the 1964 Buffalo Bills planned for 2024.
The PFRA maintains committees covering areas including the All-America Football Conference, NFL uniforms from 1933 onward, linescores for every professional game since 1920, gamebooks and play-by-play records for all NFL history, biographies of every NFL player, and professional football played before the NFL was formed in 1920.
